Anand Agricultural University, Anand

Anand Agricultural University (AAU) was established in 2004 at Anand with the support of the Government of Gujarat, Act No.(Guj 5 of 2004) dated April 29, 2004. Caved out of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University (GAU), the dream institution of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. K. M. Munshi, the AAU was set up to provide support to the farming community in three facets namely education, research and extension activities in Agriculture, Horticulture Engineering, product Processing and Home Science. At present there seven Colleges, seventeen Research Centers and six Extension Education Institute working in nine districts of Gujarat namely Ahmedabad, Anand, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Mahisagar, Botad and Chhotaudepur AAU's activities have expanded to span newer commodity sectors such as soil health card, bio-diesel, medicinal plants apart from the mandatory ones like rice, maize, tobacco, vegetable crops, fruit crops, forage crops, animal breeding, nutrition and dairy products etc. the core of AAU's operating philosophy however, continues to create the partnership between the rural people and committed academic as the basic for sustainable rural development. In pursuing its various programmes AAU's overall mission is to promote sustainable growth and economic independence in rural society. AAU aims to do this through education, research and extension education. Thus, AAU works towards the empowerment of the farmers.

    Bio fertilizer is a substance which contains living microorganisms which, when applied to the seed, plant surfaces or soil colonizes the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promotes growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the plant. In India, the commercial production of bio fertilizer commenced in 1956. But the growth in bio fertilizer sale was very slow till 1980s. Bio fertilizer production and consumption started rising considerably since last 5 years. Presently, in India, most commonly produced and marketed bio fertilizers are Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB). Today scarcity of chemical fertilizers and increasing pollution along with increasing health consciousness in the people has created a huge demand for organics and bio fertilizers. There are certain factors which affect adoption of bio-fertilizers like price, quality, availability and method of application. Hence, it becomes necessary for a company to find out the factors which really affect the adoption of bio-fertilizer.

    Rapeseed-Mustard is an important group of edible oilseed in India and ranks second after soybean. India is one of the largest producer of oilseeds in the world and this sub-sector occupies an important position in the agricultural economy. Oilseeds are grown mostly under rainfed conditions and important for the livelihood of small and marginal farmers in arid and semi-arid areas of the country. The production of oilseeds was increased from 24.35 million tonnes in 2004-05 to 25.30 million tonnes in 2015-16. The yield of oilseeds, which was 885 kg per hectare in 2004-05 increased to 968 kg per hectare in 2015-16

    Seed is the basic and most critical input for sustainable agriculture. The response of all other inputs depends on quality of seeds to a large extent. It is estimated that the direct contribution of quality seed alone to the total production is about 15 – 20% depending upon the crop and it can be further raised up with efficient management of other inputs. (Somanagouda and Shrikrishna, 2014) Pearl millet occupies a unique position in rainy season (kharif), because of its drought tolerance, less sensitive to soil deficiencies. It can be grown in inferior alluvial, sandy and loamy soil. It is used as staple food for millions of people and provides good quality fodder to cattle because it contains 11.6% protein, 5% fat, 67.5% carbohydrates and about 2.3% minerals is rich in B vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese. India is the largest producer in the Asia in both production and acreage under pearl millet, the total production of India was 10.7 million metric tonnes with acreage of 8.75 million hectares (USDA,2016).
