    Influence of Family Environment on Psychological Well Being of Rural and Urban Pre-University College Students

    A study on “Influence of family environment on psychological well being of rural and urban pre-university college students” was conducted during the year 2016-17 in Dharwad taluk under the Institution College of Rural Home Science, UAS, Dharwad. The population for the study comprised of 160 pre-university college students from rural and 160 from urban areas of government and aided pre-university colleges in the age group of 16-18 years studying in PUC-I and PUC-II year from arts and commerce streams. Ryff’s psychological well being scale, Bhatia and Chadda’s family environment scale, Sud’s self efficacy scale and socio-economic status scale were used to assess the PUC students. Correlation coefficient, modified chi- square and ‘t’ test were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that, majority of the pre-university students belonged to average level (56 %) of psychological well being in rural area and high level (52 %) in urban area. Significant difference and association was found between class, gender, types of stream and fathers’ education with psychological well being in rural area. Whereas in urban area, types of college, socio-economic status and self efficacy had significant difference and association with psychological well being. Majority of the pre-university college students belonged to average level of family environment in both rural and urban areas. There was significant association between class, gender, ordinal position, types of college and types of stream with family environment in rural and urban areas. However, in urban area fathers’ occupation and self efficacy had significant association with family environment. All the dimensions of family environment had significant relationship with psychological well being of pre-university college students among rural and urban areas.
