A STUDY ON KNOWLEDGE OF IMPROVED CULTIVATION PRACTICES OF SUGARCANE AND THEIR EXTENT OF ADOPTION BY FARMERS IN BHADRA COMMAND AREA IN DAVANGERE DISTRICT, KARNATAKA
(University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, 2002) Nagaraja, M V; Sundaraswamy
"The study was conducted during 2001 involving 240 sugarcane growers in Bhadra command area of Kamataka to measure the knowledge level and pattern of improved sugarcane cultivation and other related factors of sugarcane growers. Majority (68.32%) of the sugarcane growers were having medium knowledge, while cent per cent had correct knowledge about weedicide and number of eye buds in each sett to be used as seed material. Negligible per cent had correct knowledge about use of NPK nutrients and Trichogramma parasites. Majority (61.24%) of the farmers were in the medium category of adoption, while cent per cent adopted weedicides, seed rate and planted at correct time. Cent per cent of the respondents did not use micronutrients, control measures for stem borer, shoot borer and use of biofertilizers. The correlation exhibited non-significant relationship between NPK fertilizer applied and yield obtained. Variables area under sugarcane crop, income and level of adoption significantly contributed towards 56.00 per cent variation in the knowledge level. Significant contribution of 42.00 per cent variation in adoption was found to be from education, income and knowledge. More than three-fourth of the respondents expressed high cost of fertilizer, lack of credit facilities and policies of sugarcane factories as major constraints. The sugarcane growers preferred training on ratoon crop cultivation (68.73%), management of NPK fertilizers (66.23%) and package of growing recent varieties (56.24%). The benefit cost ratio worked out for main crop was 1 : 2.58 and for ratoon crop it was 1 : 2.85."

A STUDY ON THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF LINKAGES BETWEEN THE SCIENTISTS OF UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, DHARWAD AND EXTENSION PERSONNEL OF KARNATAKA STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN NORTHERN KARNATAKA
(University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, 2002) Gupta, Vinod; Chandargi, D M
"The study on the nature and extent of linkages between scientists and extension personnel was carried out during 2001-02 in Dharwad, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Bellary districts of northern Karnataka. The data was collected through mailed questionnaire from 102 scientists and 80 extension personnel. A scale to measure the performance of linkage activities by scientists and extension personnel was developed by following standardised procedure. The major findings of the study were : majority of the professors (85.71%), assistant professors (82.25%) and associate professors (69.23%) belonged to the medium performance category. Cent per cent of JDA's belonged to high performance category, whereas, majority of ADAs (78.26%) and AGs (75.92%) belonged to medium performance category. Over three fifth of professors (64.28%) participated occasionally in field days, whereas, majority of associate professors never participated in joint farm trials (77.41%)) and diagnostic field visits (69.35%o). The occasional participation of ADAs was found to be 52.17 per cent each in demonstration, field days and farm trials. The communication approach used by professors was phone calls regularly (50.00%o) and occasionally (50.00%o). The study also revealed that more than seventy per cent of AOs never read success stones, research articles, feature articles and newspapers. Lack of proper feedback on farmers problem from extension personnel was major constraint expressed by majority of the professors (85.71%) and associate professors (84.61 %i). Diagnostic teams are hardly constituted in many cases as expressed by majority of professors (78.51%)) and ADAs (73,91%). Cent per cent of the professors and JDAs suggested strengthening farmers participation in research and extension activities, liaison with private organisation and NGOs by both the systems and adequate transportation facilities be made available to participate in extension activities. Whereas, cent per cent of JDAs also suggested for joint participation in the functions such as field testing, demonstration for strengthening linkages."
