    lnfant mortality is considered to be a very sensitive index of the health status of a commununity . mamly infant is suceptible to all the adverse factors m the environment in a stage when it has no power of resistance A high level of infant mortality signifies waste ages of effon and investment in rearing children Infant mortality rate in India is higher than that m other developed countries~ of that of female in fant mortality is still higher sex ratio in this favour of males The fall m the number of females per 1000 males from 934 m 1981 929 in1991 has evolved widespread concern about the underlying trend in sex~differentlyi monthly and the possible contribution of alligedly widespread female infanticide following ammocen tesis.
