    Role of Women in Handloom Industry - An Exploratory Study

    The present investigation was undertaken to analyse the role of women in hand loom industries. The study was conducted in Panipat city on 100 respondents. Seventy five respondents were selected from workers and twenty five from the officers. Data were collected personally by the investigator with the help of an interview schedule. Majority of the respondents were of the age group 20-30 years. belonged to nuclear families, having 3-6 family members and married. Majority of the workers were illiterate, whereas officers were graduate. Self-income of the 72 per cent of the workers ranged between Rs 1000-2000. Approximately one third of officers had monthly self-income Rs 6000- 7000 and Rs 7000-8000 each. in total family income, majority of respondents contributed significantly. Majority of the officers and only seven workers had taken vocational training. Majority of women were employed in the tail end job such as sorting, clipping, brushing, knotting, checking, packaging. Skill was the major criteria for appointment of workers whereas for officers experience \\'as the basic criteria. Workers were usually employed as temporary and officers were permanent. Wages for majority of workers were fixed on the basis of the quantum of work done whereas in case of officers on the basis of type of work done. Majority of workers did not get any increment or bonus whereas majority of officers got the increment and bonus. To utilize acquired skill in case of workers and economic independence in case of officers were the most important factors for taking up the job. Majority of respondents had experience of 0-3 years in the present industry and on present post. Most of the workers and officers were satisfied by the facilities provided in their respective industries. Majority of workers reported lack of transport as their personal problem. Underpaid. hard physical work and exertion were the major work constraints for all the respondents. Most of the respondents had supportive attitude of employers. husbands and supervisors, whereas colleagues' attitude was non supportive for majority of workers but was supportive for majority of officers. Family members attitude was undecided both in case of workers and officers. Most of the workers were moderately satisfied and officers were satisfied with overall organisational climate perceived by them at different levels. Most of the workers were not satisfied and officers were satisfied about overall job condition. Job area, management area. social relation area and over all job satisfaction were significantly associated with organisational climate perceived by the respondents. It was found that in case of workers' marital status, size of family, husband's and supervisor's attitude, were significantly associated with job satisfaction. whereas in case of officers, only education was significantly associated. There was significant correlation between job satisfaction and organisational climate perceived by the respondents. Significant differences between workers and officers regarding education, size of family, self-income, basic facilities, employer's attitude. supervisor)s attitude and job satisfaction were also observed.
