KHistorians believe that it was women, who first started cultivation of crop plants, and initiated the art and science of !arming. Women started gathering seeds from native flora, and cultivated those of interest from the point of view of food, fodder, fiber and fuel, around their huntsmen, when their men folk went in woods for bunting. Even today, women are traditionally known for their seed selection ability {Swaminathan, 1985). Aronotf and Crano (1975) on the basis of the study o! 862 societies revealed that the world wide percentage of food production contributed by women is 43.88 with a range of 32.24 to 50.73 over specific culture areas.
