Study of Environmental Integrity & Ichthyofaunal Diversity of River Umtrew (Meghalaya) and Digaru (Assam)
    (2022) MUDOI, LAWONU PRASAD; Bhagabati, S. K.
Growing population, Industrialization and urbanization have been creating a tremendous stress an natural water bodies. The current studies present an account of environmental integrity of the northern plane region of the River Umtrew (Digaru), Meghalaya and Assam. River Umtrew originated from Meghalaya travel through a distance of approximately to 70 km and ultimately drains down to mighty Brahmaputra River. Water and Sediment samples were collected for twenty four consecutive months (January 2019 and December 2020) for 50 km river stretch starting from zero point, East khasi hill, Meghalaya. Water parameters like pH (), temperature (), DO (), Electrical conductivity (), TDS (), COD (), BOD3(), nitrate (), nitrite (), ammonia (), phosphate (), total coliform (). A total number of _____ plankton was recorded during the study period. Palmer index indicates station 4 and 5 were more polluted than other station. Overall water quality studies reveals that the stations present in the downstream areas (station 4.5 and 6) were more exposed to the pollutant. Principal Component Analysis revealed that among all the water quality parameters of the study, six parameters namely BOD3, COD, ammonia, alkalinity, turbidity and TDS are playing a distinctive role in determining the overall environmental condition of the river. The average WQI value at the upstream reference site was fell under the category from poor to very poor water quality. The WQI value in the downstream water was observed >100 which indicates the water required proper treatment before using for any purpose. Heavy metal studies depict that prolong exposure to the river water might create some serious carcinogenic health risk to the native dwellers.
