ThesisItem Open Access EFFECT OF NEEM (Azadirachta indica) LEAVES POWDER AND CINNAMON (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) OIL ON PERFORMANCE OF BROILER CHICKENS(West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, Kolkata, 2022) Nath, Sudhanya; Mandal, Guru Prasad; Santra, Ashok; Panda, Niranjan; Roy, Barun; Pakhira, M.C.; Samanta, Indranil; Maity, ApratimAn experiment was conducted to study the effect of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves powder and cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) oil on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood haematological, biochemical and antioxidant profile, immune response, gut health, carcass characteristics and intestinal morphology in broiler chickens. Day-old (n=420) Vencobb 400 chicks were randomly allotted into 6 experimental groups of 70 chicks (7 replicates of 10 chicks each). Dietary treatments were: T0 (control: basal diet), T1 (basal diet + 2 g NLP/kg), T2 (basal diet + 4 g NLP/kg), T3 (basal diet + 100 mg CNO/kg), T4 (basal diet + 200 mg CNO/kg) and T5 (basal diet + 2 g NLP/kg + 100 mg CNO/kg). Chicks were fed pre-starter diet up to 6 days which was followed by starter and finisher basal diet (ICAR, 2013). Results of the study showed supplementation of cinnamon oil (CNO, 100 and 200 mg/kg) and neem leaves powder (NLP, 2 and 4 g/kg) improved body weight gain and FCR in comparison to control. However, the improvement was better in birds that received CNO @ 100 mg/kg and a combination of CNO (100 mg/kg) and NLP (2 g/kg) compared to other supplemented birds. Digestibility of DM, EE and NFE were not affected by dietary treatments, while digestibility of CP was enhanced by supplementation of CNO, NLP and combination of CNO and NLP. Concentrations of glucose, total protein, triglycerides and total cholesterol in serum were similar across different treatment groups. Antioxidant enzyme activities and immunity were also increased in NLP and CNO and NLP + CNO supplemented groups as compared to control. Crude protein (%) in meat was significantly enhanced in birds that received CNO (100 mg/kg) and combination of CNO (100 mg/kg) and NLP (2 g/kg) compared to control. CNO, NLP and combined CNO and NLP supplementation increased faecal lactic acid bacteria and decreased faecal E. coli count. Supplementation of CNO (100 mg/kg) and combined CNO (100 mg/kg) and NLP (2 g/kg) increased villi height in small intestine in comparison to other groups. In conclusion, supplementation of cinnamon oil (CNO) and neem leaves powder (NLP) alone or in combination increased the growth performance, digestibility of crude protein, villi height in small intestine, immunity, antioxidant enzyme activity and supported establishment of a favourable gut microbiota composition in broiler chickens. However, the response was better in birds supplemented with CNO (100 mg/kg) and a combination of CNO (100 mg/kg) and NLP (2 g/kg). Overall, the present findings suggest that CNO @ 100 mg/kg may be used as a growth promoter in broiler chickens.ThesisItem Open Access A study on dietary organo ( origanum vulgare ) essential oil as alternative to antibiotic growth promoters in broiler chickens(2018) Mondal, Ramiz; Chatterjee, Dr. P.
