(Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli., 2020-09) CHAVHAN, MAYUR VIKRAM; Prasade, N. N.; Bhagat, D. J.; Dandekar, V. S.; Warwadekar, S. C.
A survey was conducted to characterize indigenous chicken in Palghar district of Maharashtra. From Palghar district eight tahasils were selected for survey, from these tahsils three villages were selected randomly. In third stage three poultry owners having minimum 5 indigenous chickens were selected. The total number of farmers was 72. The total number of birds was 360. Poultry was mostly looked after by age group of 18-35 years (40.27%) rather than other age group. Those farmers educated up to HSC were engaged in indigenous poultry rearing. Mostly landless, small and marginal farmers reared indigenous chicken. Most of the farmers in Palghar district have annual income less than Rs. 25,000. Maximum percentage of farmers reared indigenous chicken for home consumption (88.88%) in Palghar which indicated that utility of indigenous chicken in this region was for meat as well as for egg purpose. Almost all farmers (86.11%) housed them in kaccha housing system while only few (13.88%) used pakka housing system at night only. 73.60 per cent farmers provided supplemented feed along with scavenging, while 26.38 per cent farmers allowed scavenging feeding only. Minimum numbers (22.22%) of farmers vaccinate their chicken and others (66.66%) did not vaccinate. Flock size was ranged from minimum 8 to maximum 30 with mean value 16.08 ± 4.83. Single comb was observed in 92.71 per cent of indigenous chicken in Palghar district. The comb colour observed was dominantly red with 86.10 per cent and also with yellow beak color (86.19%) in Palghar district. Red earlobe color was found in maximum chickens with 72.77 per cent appearance along with 92.49 per cent orange black eye color. 26.94 per cent chickens were with red plumage followed by brown (24.16%), black (20.27%), grey (11.66%), golden (10.27%), mix (4.16%) and white (2.49%), respectively. Solid plumage pattern was observed in 58.05 per cent in Palghar district. The average live body weight of female was 1.230±0.064 kg. While in male it was 1.603±0.13 kg. The comb length and width was higher (61.51±2.40 and 25.67±1.35 mm.) in males than females (23.36±2.30 and 14.12±0.72 mm.) in Palghar district. The average wattle length and width of male was 22.77±1.02 mm and 21.40±1.66 mm and that of female was 20.74±0.94 mm and 13.91±0.54 mm. The shank length of male and female was 74.66±1.33 and 71.65±1.00 mm in Palghar district respectively, while thigh length of male and female chicken was 112.28±1.75 and 101.73±1.53 mm respectively. The average egg production per year observed was 60.43±0.39. Overall egg production per clutch recorded was 13.78±0.37 eggs. Average number of clutches recorded as 4.39±0.09 in Palghar district. Average fertility observed was 69.92 per cent while hatchability on total eggs set was 74.11 per cent.
