    Agri~business is the fastest growing sub-sector of India's agricultural sector. B.~~he Central and State governments in India now attach a high priority to this sub-sector. While the share of agriculture in India's Gross Domestic Product (GOP) has been declining over time, th_e share of agri-business sub-sector has been going up due to increasing demand for value addition to primary agricuhural produce. Hence agri-business has high potential for further growth and development. However, to realize this potential, it is imperative, among other things, that the sub-sector is professionally managed by well trained and skilled agri-business managers. This paper identifies some of the emerging challenges that agri-business enterprises and their managers are facing now and will continue to face in near future as also the opportunities that are unfolding for them in the new era characterized by privatisation, liberalization, and globalization. Some of the major problems identified include: poor financial performance and the consequent lack of financial viability. lack of professional management, lack of ability to cope with increasing competition, lack or inadequacy of basic infrastructure, and lack of funds necessary for diversification and modernising of agri-business operations.
