    Standardization of Softwood Grafting Technique in Sapota (Manilkara Achras (Mill.) Fosberg] Cv. Kalipatti Under South Gujarat Conditions

    The present investigation entitled "Standardization of oftwood grafting technique in sapota [Manilkara achras (Mill) Fosberg] v. Kalipatti under south Gujarat conditions" was carried out during July 004 to June 2005 at Fruit Research Station, Navsari Agricultural Jniversity, Gandevi. The investigation comprising thirty six treatment ombinations of three wrapping materials, two storage conditions and six torage periods was conducted in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) n Factorial concept with three repetitions. Three wrapping materials vere viz .. banana dry sheath (T I), wrapping in sphagnum moss and 'WI.oist ealing in,gunny bag (T2) and wrapping in newspaper and sealing in ,erforated polythene bag (TJ ); two storage conditions consisting efrigerator condition (C I) and room temperature condition (C 2) and six torage periods comprising one day (P,) , three days (P2). five days (PJ ) , even days (P4 ), nine days (P s) and eleven days (P6 ) of scion storage after letachment from mother tree. The maximum sprouting and minimum days required for leaf emergence were recorded when softwood grafting made with scion sticks stored after wrapping in newspaper and sealing in perforated polythene bag (T3)' Consequently, the maximum growth of grafts in terms of height, girth and total number of leaves with maximum success and cost benefit ratio were also noted in T 3 treatment. The highest sprouting, success , growth of sapota grafts and cost benefit ratio received when grafts made with scion sticks stored at room temperature condition (C 2) as compared to refrigerator condition. The maximum sprouting, success, growth and cost benefit ",as catio were obtained when grafting "done with scion sticks stored for 3 fays (P2) which decreased with increased in storage period. When grafts made with scion sticks stored after wrapping in lewspaper and sealing in perforated polythene bag at room temperature :ondition for 3 days (T3C2P2) gave highest success (75.00%) with higher :ost benefit ratio (1:2.18) and growth in terms of height and number of eaves on sapota grafts. It is concluded from the present studies that under south Jujarat conditions, sapota softwood grafting can be done with higher conomic return using stored scion sticks for three days after wrapping in ewspaper and sealing in perforated polythene bag at room temperature ondition. The scion sticks stored for three days found more active with igher success and better growth. This will help the long distance 'ansport of scion material of elite varieties and rapid spread of the ultivars developed at other centers as well as beneficial to commercial urseryman

    Development of Sapota (Manilkara achras (Mill) Fosberg) Product : Dehydrated Slices in Cv. kalipatti

    Investigation on "Development of sapota (Manilkara achras (Mill) Fosberg) product: dehydrated slices in cv. Kalipatti" was conducted at the PG and preservation laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, N. M. College of Agriculture, Navsari Agricultural University , Navsari during the month of April to September 2006. Keeping the treatments of To (control) , T J (50 per cent sugar + 2 per cent KMS), T2 (Acid lime juice + 2 per cent KMS), T) (Orange juice + 2 per cent KMS), T4 (Mosambi juice + 2 per cent KMS), Ts (pineapple juice + 2 per cent KMS) and T6 (Grape juice + 2 per cent KMS) in CRD design with three . repetitions. The nutritional value viz . Reducing sugar (per cent), Total sugar (per cent), Moisture (per cent), Acidity (per cent), Ascorbic acid (mg/! OOg), TSS (per cent) and organoleptic evaluation from the product was done in respect of colour, texture, flavour, taste and overall acceptance and there after product was evaluated and studied during the storage. • Among the all treatments RS and TS were observed significantly maximum in pre treatments of T J , T 3 , T2, T6 , while, To is observed significantly lower in respect of RS and TS content. On the other hand, moisture found maximum in treatment To , T J and T 2 were also observed equally good in respect of lower moisture content and it increased at 3 and up to 6 months of storage. However, acidity found significantly maximum in T2 treatment and observed lowest in T J treatment and during the storage, it observed in increasing trend. In respect of AA content, it observed equivalently highest in T2, T3 and T4 treatments and lowest in To treatment. While, AA observed decreasing in trend during the storage. However, TSS found non significant and observed increasing in trend during the storage. Considering the organoleptic evaluation of product, it can be elicited that treatments T3, T J , T2 and T4 were found significantly equivalent in respect of colour, texture, flavour, taste and overall acceptability then rest of treatments. Hence, the pretreatment of different juices increased the nutritional value of dehydrated sapota product in respect of biochemical as well as organoleptic quality characters then the untreated sapota slices. Thus, the significant achievement obtained in respect of dehydration by developing new juice blended product thereby value addition in slices of sapota fruits cv. Kalipatti.
