ThesisItem Open Access Studies on introgression for fibre traits in cotton(UAS, Dharwad, 2006) Vikrant Desunagi; I.S.KatageriAn investigation was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad Farm during kharif 2005-06 to study genetic introgression for fibre traits in a cross between G. herbaceum var. DDhc-11 (cultivated diploid variety) and G. anomalum to improve fibre properties in desi cotton in the present study four populations viz., BC1F3, BC2F2, BC3F1 and F4 were studied. Distinguishable morphological characters such as leaf colour, leaf hairiness, stem colour, stem hairiness, anther colour, filament colour and bract shape were studied for all four populations. Based on recombination for morphological traits several crosses of recombination viz., 31 in BC1F3, 32 in BC2F2, 19 in BC3F1 and 12 in F4 were studied. All plants of four populations were studied for halo length and detailed yield contributing characters. Based on sufficient lint availability some of the plants were studied for fibre properties in detail. In all the four populations desirable plants for seed cotton yield (100-298 g/plant), GOT (36-39.6%), boll weight (2.45 to 3.0 g), boll number (55-183), 2.5% span length (25-27 mm), fibre strength (21-24.78 g/tex), micronaire (3.3 – 5.1), suitable count (20-40) were studied as against 89 g/plant (SCY), 32 per cent (GOT), 2.0 (boll weight), 49.87 (boll number), 23.11 (fiber length), 19.16 (fibre strength), 5.09 (micronaire) and 20 (count) of DDhc-11. The similarity to the extent >0.75 between DDhc-11 and highly desirable plants interms of seed cotton yield and high fibre strength plants number 3-6 [(120 g/plant), (19.9 g/tex)], 18.2 [(218 g/plant), (20.8 g/tex)], 2-9 [(188 g/plant), (20.2 g/tex)] and 1-2 [(87 g/plant), (21 g/tex) were identified.
