ArticleItem Open Access Guttural pouch empyema in thoroughbred horse and its management(2014-12) Pothiappan, P; Sridhar, K; Kavitha, S; Selvaraj, P; Nambi, AP; Srinivasan, SR; TANUVASAn eight year old Thoroughbred gelding was presented to the Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with the history of inappetance, bilateral purulent nasal discharge, respiratory noise, painful swelling below the ear since one month. Clinical examination revealed elevated temperature (39.50C), firm retropharyngeal swelling, purulent bilateral nasal discharge, stertorous breathing, respiratory noise, dysphagia a.nd lymphadenopathy of local lymph nodes. Blood parameters were within the normal limits. Upper respiratory tract endoscopy was performed at rest which showed purulent material and tympanitis in the guttural pouch. Based on endoscopy the case was diagnosed as Guttural Pouch Empyema. Guttural pouch were washed with normal saline weekly twice for two weeks. Based on ABST result Inj. Ceftriaxone @ 10 mg / kg b.wt, i.v was administered twice daily for l5 days. The animal showed clinical improvement after therapy.ArticleItem Open Access Pulmonary aspergillosis in a seventeen-day old ostrich chick (Struthio camelus)(2018) Pazhanivel, N; Saahithya, R; Thangapandian, M; Sudhakar Rao, Ganne Venkata; Sridhar, K; TANUVASAspergillosis is an acute fatal to chronic disease in birds. Tissues of lung and liver from 17 days old ostrich chicks submitted to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai – 7 for histopathological examination from Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, Chennai. History of sudden death and subsequent conduction of post-mortem examination was reported. Gross examination of the lung revealed multifocal grey white coloured nodules measuring about 0.5 cm to 3 cm diameter. Nodule extended deep into the parenchyma upon incision. Liver was pale in appearance. Histopathological examination revealed multiple granulomatous nodule with central caseo-necrotic areas surrounded by inflammatory cells predominantly lymphocytes, macrophages and heterophils in the lung. Multinucleated giant cells were seen. Fungal mycelia was seen with routine Haematoxylin and Eosin and special stain of Gomori’s Grocott silver stain (GG) which showed black colored fungal septate branching hyphae and was suggestive of Aspergillus spp. Liver showed congestion, micro vesicular to macro vesicular fatty degenerative changes.
