ThesisItem Open Access Residual Effect of nickel on growth and yield of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) and its effect on nitrogen utilization by the plant.(Department Of Soil Science And Agricultural Chemistry Institute Of Agricultural Sciences Banaras Hindu University Varanasi, 2020) Rana, Manjulata; Singh, S.K.A pot experiment was conducted during 2019-2020 on cowpea (Kashi Nidhi), to study the response of residual nickel in combination with fresh application of various doses of nitrogen in cowpea. This experiment includes 13 treatment combinations comprising recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) as 50% RDN, 100%RDN and 150% RDN and four residual Ni levels (Ni2.5, Ni5, Ni10 and Ni20 ppm) in completely randomized design (CRD) with three repetitions. The Ni application through NiCl2.6H2O was given in the previous experiment where soybean was the test crop. The result showed that growth and yield attributes viz. plant height, greenness index, number of branches, number of pods plant-1, number of seeds pod-1, stover yield and seed yield of cowpea was the maximum with application of 150% RDN along with the residual nickel in soil due to the previous application of nickel at 10 mg kg-1 over RDF and other treatments. The concentration of N and Fe in stover and seed increased significantly up to previous soil application of Ni at 10 mg kg-1 and after this level, a significant decline was recorded in various treatments. As regards the concentration of Ni is concerned, it increased significantly both in seed and stover in treatments with increasing levels of Ni application previously. The uptake of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in cowpea increased significantly due to both the effect of levels of N as well as residual Ni. The maximum urease activity in post-harvest soil was noticed with 150% RDN and previous year application of Ni at 20 mg kg-1 soil.
