Non pregnant does were inserted with intravaginal progesterone sponge containing 300 mg of progesterone on day 0 and administered Inj. Cloprotenol sodium (Pragma) 125μg on day 10. The sponge was removed on day 11 of insertion followed by intramuscular injection of 200 I.U. of eCG (Inj.Folligon). Timed Artificial Insemination was done twice at 12 and 24 h interval using Tellicherry frozen semen. Among the synchronized does,359 does were confirmed pregnant by 30-45 days post insemination using transrectal ultrasonography with a conception rate of 83.87% and fecundity rate of 2.038. The study concludes that the progesterone based intravaginal sponge in combination with eCGcan be effectively used for estrus synchronization programme to improve conception rate and fecundity in non-descript goats at farmers flocks.ArticleItem Open Access Hysterotomy for Management of Dystocia due to Prepartum Vagino-Cervical Prolapse Coupled with Vaginal Tear in a Jersey Crossbred Cow(2021) Sarath, T.; Rangasamy, S.; Arunmozhi, N.; Sureshkumar, R.; Pugazharasi, C.; TANUVASVagino-cervical prolapse is a common reproductive disorder of ruminants, usually seen in pluriparous cows in late gestation and occasionally after parturition (Noakes et al., 2019). It is mainly seen in ruminants, rare in other species, and usually involves protrusion of the floor, the lateral walls, and a portion of the roof of the vagina through the vulva with the cervix and uterus moving caudally (Roberts, 2004). Predisposing factors include hereditary factors in some cattle breeds, increased intra-abdominal pressure, intra-abdominal fat or rum n distention, softening of the pelvic ligaments, bacterial or fungal infections, hormonal imbalance, hypocalcemia, mineral deficiency, and feed containing phyto-estrogens like clover, soybean meal, etc. (Roberts, 2004; Miesner and Anderson, 2008). Highconcentration of estrogen secreted by the placenta in the last trimester of pregnancy causes relaxation of the vulva, vulvar sphincter muscles, pelvic ligaments, and adjacent structures, leading to vagino-cervical prolapse in cows (Roberts, 2004; Wolfe, 2009). A combination of increased estrogen with decreased progesterone and production of relaxin, especially in the last two weeks of gestation, may cause relaxation of the pelvic ligaments and surrounding soft tissues (Henricks et al., 2011). The present paper reports a rare case of dystocia due to prepartum vagino-cervical prolapse coupled with a vaginal tear in a Jersey crossbred cow and its successful delivery through hysterotomy.ArticleItem Open Access Pregnancy Monitoring Using Four-Dimensional (4D) Ultrasonography in Bitches(TANUVAS, Chennai, 2021-01) Suresh Kumar, R.; Sarath, T.; Umamageswari, J.; Rangasamy, S.; Arunmozhi, N.; Pugazharasi, C.; Krishnakumar, K.; TANUVASThe study was conducted on pregnant bitches at Small Animal Gynaecology Ward, Department of Clinics, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai- 600007, Tamil Nadu to evaluate the use of four-dimensional (4D) ultrasonography in staging embryonic and fetal development and for predicting the pregnancy outcome and to study the fetal anomalies and fetal resorptionin bitches. Twelve pregnant bitches of different breeds of 10 to 40 kg body weight were the experimental animals for the study. All the twelve pregnant bitches were subjected to both 2D and 4D ultrasound examinations at days 30, 40, 50 and 60 post breeding. The accuracy of gestational age prediction based on gestational sac diameter and head diameter using 4D ultrasound was studied and compared with 2D (two-dimensional) ultrasound. The present paper reports the use of 4D ultrasonography in diagnosing fetal activity, fetal anomalies and fetal resorption in bitches.ArticleItem Open Access Supplementation of fish meal and exogenous administration of COX-2 inhibitor on conception rate in repeat breeding Jersey crossbred cows(TANUVAS, Chennai, 2020-01) Sarath, T.; Arunmozhi, N.; Joseph, Cecilia; Rangasamy, S.; Kumar, R. Suresh; Pugazharasi, C.; TANUVASThe study was conducted on repeat breeding cows at Large Animal Gynaecology Ward, Department of Clinics, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and some private cattle farms in and around Koduvalli region, Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. In experiment I, Jersey crossbred cows (n=31) synchronized by PGF2α and inseminated on exhibited estrum. The cows were randomly divided into five groups viz. Group I (control, n=6), group II (n=7,100mg), group III (n=6, 150mg), group IV (n=6, 200mg) and group V (n=6, 250mg) and supplemented with fish meal on day 13, 14 and 15 of post insemination in addition to their routine feed. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out by rectal palpation on day 60 of post inseminationArticleItem Open Access Traumatic Evisceration of Abomasum in a Jersey Crossbred Cow Surgical Management(2019-05) Pugazharasi, C.; Veeramani, P.; Ali, M.G.; Joseph, Cecilia; Sarath, T.; TANUVASA five year old Jersey crossbred cow was presented with the history of recent trauma of ventral abdomen followed by protrusion of viscera through it. Clinical examination revealed the eviscerated mass as abomasum. The animal was sedated using xylazine @ 0.2mg/kg and the abomasum was reduced into the abdominal cavityand the peritoneum and abdominal muscles were sutured using No.0 Chromic Catgut in simple continuous and interlocking suture pattern, respectively. The skin was sutured using cotton suture material in crisscross pattern. Post-operative care was followed and the animal had an uneventful recovery.ArticleItem Open Access Ultrasound guided transvaginal follicular aspiration technique for chronic follicular cyst in a Holstein Friesian crossbred cow(TANUVAS, Chennai, 2020-05) Pugazharasi, C.; Sarath, T.; Arunmozhi, N.; Sureshkumar, R.; Kalyaan, U.S.; Krishnakumar, K.; Balasubramanian, S.; TANUVASA ten-year-old pluriparous crossbred cow with the history of prolonged estrus signs was presented to the Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital. Per rectal examination revealed follicular cyst in the right ovary. On real-time ultrasonography, a large anechoic follicle and multiple follicles were visualized in the right and left ovary, respectively. The case was diagnosed as Cystic Ovarian Degeneration due to follicular cyst and treated with 20μg-GnRH intramuscularly. Re-examination after 10 days revealed persisted cyst on right ovary and even after second GnRH, the condition persisted. Further, the cow was treated with PGF2α @ 500μg intramuscularly but cysts the persisted. Then, the cyst was punctured and follicular fluid aspirated through ultrasound guided transvaginal probe with a needle and about 12 ml of follicular fluid was recovered but the cyst recurred again. Hence, from the study it was concluded that the case was non-responsive for either hormonal therapy or ultrasound guided transvaginal follicular aspiration which might be due to its chronic, secretory nature and thus the prognosis remains poor.
