PangaonkarThe present study was conducted on 41 freshly calvEd Murrah buffaloes to ascertain the effect of different treatments viz. oxytocin, Drostaglandin (PGF2a analogue) and vitamin E and selenium or their combinations on shedding of foetal membranes, uterine involution and future fertility. PGF2a ;Wren, 5 ml im) was administered 1 h after calving (n=6) whereas oxytocin (30 IU lin) was injected 15 min after parturition (n=4). A second dose of oxytocin was given 2 h after calving (n=4). E-CARE-Se (Tocopherol, 500 mg + selenium 15 mg, im) was administered two weeks prior to expected date of calving (n=5). Their combinations were also tried by keeping the time schedule similar to when they are used singly. The combinations were oxytocin (single or double injections) + prostaglandin and vitamin E & selenium + oxytocin (single or two injection) and prostaglandin (n=8). Reproductive parameters like gestation length, sex and weight of calf, expulsion time and weight of foetal membranes were recorded. Heparinized blood samples (about 15 ml) were collected on day 14 prepartum for control and selenium treated animals and thereafter twice a week till 56 days postpartum. Blood plasma was analysed for estimating progesterone, selenium, calcium and inorganic phosphorus. Combined use of PG and oxytocin just after calving or vitamin E & selenium two weeks prior to calving has excellent results in expelling the foetal membranes. Oxytocin in combination with PG or vitamin E & selenium significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the involution time than oxytocin alone. Calcium, phosphorus and selenium levels did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) in prepartum and postpartum period after selenium therapy. PG and oxytocin treatment proved to be the best in reducing the service period. Moreover, conception rate was highest with PG + oxytocin treatment.
