ArticleItem Open Access Bhadra (MO 4) A high yielding dwarf rice variety for Kuttanad(Kerala Agricultural University, 1981) Nair, N R; Nair, S S; Rema Bai, NIR-8 and Ptb-20 were crossed in 1967-68 at Rice Research Station Moncompu in order to evolve a high yielding variety possessing good grain quality attributes. Culture M-11-57-5-1 is a derivative of the above cross. It has recorded significantly higher yield than the popular high yielding varieties Jaya and Bharathy in the experiments in the Research Station, in State Seed Farm and in cultivators' fields It was also superior to two other varieties Sabari and Aswathi under Kuttanad conditions. Further, this possesses additional attributes like good tolerance to Brown plant hopper and desirable grain qualities. This culture was released by the variety Release Committee of the State as a 'variety under the name "Bhadra" (M 04).ArticleItem Open Access Influence of climatic factors on populations of the brown plant hopper in Kuttanad, Kerala(Kerala Agricultural University, 1980) Nair, K P V; Mammen, K V; Pillai, K B; Nair, S S; KAUStudies carried out at the Rice Research Station, Moncompu, Kerala, during 1974-76 showed that in the Kuttanad rice tract, brown plant hopper Nilaparvata /ugens (Stal.) is present in the field throughout the year with a major population peak during January to March for themain crop (winter crop) and a minor peak during August to September for the second crop {autumn crop). Correlation studies revealed that the hopper population was significantly influenced by climatic factors. The variety used wasTriveni. Results revealed that skipping of potash during the alternate seasons is not affecting the yield, end hence csn be adopted for economising ihe expenditure. Skipping of phosphorus is having depressing effect on yieid.
