There are various factors which affect the freshness of the meat the most important factors are storage temperature, time of exposure of meat to extrinsic factors and handling of carcass during and after slaughter. Hence a study was conducted to compare the physico chemical characteristics of chevon carcass hanged at room temperature for 6 hours and at chiller temperature for 30 hours. Twenty four numbers of 6 months old tellicherry young male goats were selected and they were slaughtered by the standard procedure. The carcass was vertically split into two halves and one half was exposed to room temperature and another half to chiller temperature. On hourly interval the samples were collected and physico chemical parameters like pH, water holding capacity and shear force value was analysed. Under both temperature treatments, as the storage hour increased, pH value, water holding capacity decreased significantly but the shear force value increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) up to 5th hour in ambient temperature and up to 9th hour in chiller temperature then shear force value start decreasing. Between treatments, except 0th hour, all the hour showed highly significant (p˂0.01) difference between storage treatments up to 6 hours of comparison. The pH decline was faster in chevon stored under ambient temperature than under chiller temperature. Higher water holding capacity was also found in chiller temperature storage. The shear force value was higher in ambient temperature. It was concluded that keeping the carcass in the chilling conditions prolongs the shelf life and increase the tenderness of meat.ArticleItem Open Access GOAT FARMING PRACTICES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INTENSIFICATION(TANUVAS, 2017) Narmatha, N; Karthikeyan, S; Thirunavukkarasu, D; Uma, V; Saravanan, KP; TANUVASGoat which was known as “Wet nurse of infant” in the United Kingdom and “Poor man‘s cow” in India was the first animal to be domesticated. A total of 120 respondents who were availing the health services from different dairy service delivery systems were selected using proportionate random sampling and data were collected and analyzed. Most of the respondents predominantly availed the curative (99.17%) and preventive (95.00%) services from the private veterinarians; and medicines from the pharmacies (98.33%) than other dairy service providers. It was perceived by the dairy farmers that the curative services, preventive services and supply of medicines by private veterinarians were effective in terms of regularity and quality. Dairy farmers perceived that animal husbandry department provided cost effective curative services, preventive services and medicines because most of the services were provided at free of cost. Further, they perceived that the timely curative and preventive services were provided by animal husbandry department, whereas pharmacies delivered medicines in time as they operate within the vicinity of the dairy farmers. Overall, the health services offered by the animal husbandry department were perceived to be most effective than other dairy service providers. Hence, dairy co-operatives and private integrators need to make enormous efforts to improve the health service delivery to reach the farmers.ArticleItem Open Access Perceived Effectiveness of Dairy Service Delivery Systems in Namakkal District of Tamil Nadu, India(Excellent Publishers, 2018) Karthikeyan, S; Arunmozhi Devi, MC; Narmatha, N; Uma, V; TANUVASThe present study was conducted in Namakkal District of Tamil Nadu to analyse the perceived effectiveness of various dairy service delivery systems like dairy co-operative, private integrators, public departments, private veterinarians, para-veterinarians, etc. and their extent of share in delivering the dairy services to farmers. A total of 120 respondents were selected for the study by proportionate random sampling method and the data were collected by personal interview method using pre-tested interview schedule. Most of the respondents predominantly availed the curative (99.17 per cent) and preventive (95.00 per cent) services from the private veterinarians; and medicines from the pharmacies (98.33 per cent) than other dairy service delivery systems. The para-veterinarians are the major source for 75.83 per cent of the respondents for availing artificial insemination services. The respondents predominantly availed the services like concentrate feed (73.33 per cent); mineral mixture (73.33 per cent); insurance (57.78 per cent) and training and advisory services (60.00 per cent) from dairy co-operative, whereas fodder seeds and slips and credit facilities were mainly availed from neighbours (59.17 per cent) and banks (12.50 per cent) respectively. Overall it was perceived that the public department was effective in delivering heath and artificial insemination services, providing insurance and mineral mixture to the dairy farmers while the dairy co-operative was perceived to be effective in supplying fodder seeds and slips, credit facilities and training and advisory services. The commercial feed agencies were perceived as the effective service provider in supplying commercial concentrate feed than others. KeywordsArticleItem Open Access PERCEPTION OF DAIRY FARMERS REGARDING EFFECTIVENESS OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION SERVICES OF DIFFERENT DAIRY SERVICE DELIVERY SYSTEMS(West Bengal Veterinary Association, 2018-06) Karthikeyan, S; Arunmozhi Devi, MC; Narmatha, N; Uma, V; TANUVASThe perceived effectiveness of artificial insemination (AI) services offered by different dairy service delivery systems was studied in Namakkal district of Tamilnadu.
