Polycystic kidney is defined as a genetically determined cystic lesion of either the autosomal-dominant (ADPKD) or autosomal-recessive forms (ARPKD). Two non-descriptive and a German shepherd dogs were diagnosed with unilateral polycystic kidney disease by abdominal ultrasonography. Functional loss and development of end stage renal disease (ESRD) was seen in a five year old female non-descriptive dog but no signs of renal impairment was seen in remaining two dogs.ArticleItem Open Access Secondary Aspiration Pneumonia in a Calf(Indian Veterinary Association, Chennai, 2019-07) Ismail, A.L. Mohammed; Gopalakrishnan, A.; Arunaman, C.S.; Shammi, Mala; Kavitha, S.; Sumathi, D.; Jayathangaraj, M.G.; Joseph, Cecilia; TANUVASA one month old cross bred calf was brought to Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with history of regurgitation of undigested feed material and milk from both nostrils since its birth. Physical examination showed congested mucus membrane, pyrexia and dyspnea. Plain radiography revealed air filled dilated esophagus with alveolar pattern overlying and obscuring the caudal cardiac silhouette indicating aspiration. Contrast radiographs revealed dilated esophagus at the upper cervical and lower thoracic esophagus.The case was diagnosed as aspiration pneumonia due to congenital megaesophagus.ArticleItem Open Access Spontaneous Pneumothorax in Two Dogs – A Report(Indian Veterinary Association, 2018-05) Ranjithkumar, M.; Thilagar, M.B.; Gopalakrishnan, A.; Sumathi, D.; Pushkinraj, H.; Jayathangaraj, M.G.; TANUVASTwo dogs aged one and 4 years were reported with the history of severe respiratory distress, retching and lateral recumbency. On physical examination, there was hyperechoic resonance during percussion. Radiographic examination con rmed the cases with elevated cardiac silhouette from sternum and atelectic lung lobes. Thoracocentesis was carried on emergency basis initially at 8th and 11th intercostals space and twice at 12 hour interval. Both dogs recovered clinically from second day onwards. Complete recovery without any recurrence was observed from third day onwards. On clinical swilylng movement oflneck and motility, flagging of neck with hypothermia were noticed. Hemogram revealed mild anemia with normal leucocyte count. Venous Blood Gas analysis revealed hypokalemia (3.09mmol/1). In peripheral blood smear Anaplasinamarginale was detected. Serum biochemical analysis was also done to evaluate the metabolic status. The case was confirmed as downer with hypokalemia and concurrent anaplasrnosis and was treated for metabolic disorder and concurrent anaplasmosis. Pushkin; TANUVASProstate is a bi-lobed, encapsulated and bilaterally symmetrical ovoid gland, located caudal to the bladder, encircling the proximal urethra. Five intact male dogs with prostatic abscess were selected to study the ef cacy of transabdominal ultrasonographic evaluation and performed needle aspiration of abscessed material from the prostatic gland. Recurrence of prostatic abscess was noticed in one dog (1/5) during the period of study. Ultrasonographic examination of prostate gland aided as diagnostic modality, helped to perform therapeutic procedures and also used to monitor the outcome of the treatment.ArticleItem Open Access Unilateral Facial Palsy in Two Dogs - A Report(Indian Veterinary Association, 2018-12) Ranjithkumar, M.; Chandrasekaran, D.; Gopalakrishnan, A.; Pothiappan, P.; Jayathangaraj, M.G.; TANUVASTwo dogs aged 4 and 6 years were presented with the history of drooling of saliva, lacrimation and dyschezia. One dog was treated for otitis externa 6 months back. On physical examination, there was unilateral facial muscle palsy, loss of menace and palpebral reflex and drooping of lips and ear on the affected side. Radiographic examination confirmed the enlarged tymphanic bulla of otitis media in one dog. Both animals were treated with predinisolone @ 1mg/kg for 15 days along with other neuroprotective agents. Both dogs started showing signs of recovery from first week onwards. In addition oral cephalexin was administered in otitis case and advised for surgical correction also. Idiopathic and otitis induced facial nerve palsy and its successful management is reported here.
