ThesisItem Open Access READABILITY OF AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION, FARMERS' READING HABIT AND PREFERENCES(University of Agricultural Sciences GKVK, Bangalore, 2008-07-31) BHAVYA, K.; Nanjappa, D.Readability refers to how easily a piece of writing is read and understood by readers. Any writing meant for the farmers should be at their level of school education in order to make it understandable to them. Investigation of the reading habit of the readers may provide useful hints for improving the format of the publication. Keeping this in view the following objectives were formulated. To measure the readability of the selected dailies and other agricultural publications, to understand the reading habit of farmers, to know the socioeconomic characteristics of reader farmers and their relationship with the reading habit index, to know the reader farmers preference, opinion and suggestions. Readability was measured using the formula developed by Nanjappa (1992) and survey research was conducted in Mandya district by personal interview technique. The findings of the study revealed that most of the articles of newspapers, farm magazines, books and leaflets were at high school level. Majority of the reader farmers belonged to middle age group, small family, marginal land holding, low social participation and extension participation, medium level of annual income, material possession and cosmopoliteness. Majority of the farmers were having high mass media participation, three to four hours of leisure time. Majority of the farmers were subscribing and reading Prajavani followed by Vijaya Karnataka. Majority of the farmers read the newspaper daily and partially for agricultural information and had spent 20 to 40 minutes. A great majority of farmers preferred to read the articles written by farmers. There was a significant association between the reading habit of the farmers and level of their education, size of land holding, annual income, social participation and extension participation.
