ThesisItem Open Access Comparative draught capacity of cattle and buffaloes(Department of Livestock Production Management, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, 1994) Anil, K S; KAU; Thomas, C KThe draught performance of Kangayam bullocks were compared with that of graded Surti buffaloe bullocks under the agro climatic conditions of Kerala with a hot humid tropical climate Two pairs of adult Kangayam bullocks and two pairs of adult graded Surti buffaloe bullocks were used for ploughing both dry land and wet land at the rate of four hours a day during the summer season Physiological responses like respiratory rate pulse rate and rectal temperature and haemotological parameters like haemoglobin per cent erythrocyte sedimentation rate packed cell volume lactic acid and plasma bicarbonate were estimated before work immediately after work and after one hour of rest after work The dry matter intake and water intake on days of work and on days of no work were also measured and compared Other parameters like the area ploughed in one hour average speed of walking stride length and traction force developed during ploughing were also compared between the two species The buffaloe bullocks had significantly lower physiological responses before the start of work when compared to that of indigenous bullocks As a result of work the physiological responses increased significantly in both species The values were higher for buffaloes during dry ploughing The physiological responses including rectal temperature of buffaloes increased to a level indicative of distress due to heat stress There were also other signs of distress like frothing and drooling of saliva and protrusion of tongue But during wet ploughing the responses were not so marked in case of buffaloes and they did not show any apparent signs of distress The physiological responses decreased but did not reach the pre-exercise values after one hour of rest The haemoglobin per cent of blood packed cell volume and plasma bicarbonate content decreased significantly in cattle and buffaloes during dry and wet ploughing The erythrocyte sedimentation rate and blood lactic acid content showed a significant increase as a result of work One hour of rest was not sufficient to bring these parameters to pre exercise values Buffaloes consumed more DM when expressed in grams per kg metabolic body size Both species consumed more on days of no work The difference was more pronounced in case of buffaloes The water intake expressed as ml/kg metabolic body size was significantly higher for buffaloes both on days of work and on days of no work In both the species the water intake remained similar in days on which they were used for work and they were not used Kangayam bullocks ploughed significantly more area per unit time than graded Surti buffaloe bullock Cattle developed significantly more speed than buffaloes during dry ploughing But during wet ploughing the speed was almost same in both species Cattle showed more stride length during dry and wet ploughings than buffaloes But during wet ploughing the difference was negligible There was no significant difference in the traction power developed between cattle and buffaloes during dry or wet ploughings But both species developed higher horse power during wet ploughing Overall the results indicate that during summer in a hot humid tropical environment Kangayam bullocks can be used for dry as well as wet ploughings without any apparent ill effects Graded Surti buffaloe bullocks are on par with Kangayam bullocks under wet-ploughing However they seem to be under severe heat stress and also their work output inferior when used for a continuous 4 hour period of dry-land ploughing under similar climatic conditionsThesisItem Open Access Management of captive young elephants in Kerala(Department of Livestock Production Management, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, 2006) Acty, George; KAU; Anil, K SThe present study was undertaken to suggest suitable recommendations in the management of captive young elephants of Kerala after assessing the existing management, feeding and training practices through survey method. The credibility of information collected was cross checked with physical verification. Data was collected from the owners’ house holds and offices and sites where animal was tethered by personal interviews during March to August 2006. The observations made were on routine, housing feeding, diseases and health management, behaviour and temperament and record keeping. From the study, it was evident that majority of the elephant owners, first and second mahouts belonged to middle age groups. Even though none of the owners received training, half of the owners were richly experienced in elephant management. Majority of the owners and mahouts selected elephant rearing as hereditary business or job. Injury was a major constraint in case of mahouts. The young animals were divided in to three groups based on their age as 0- 2yrs (Group I), 2-6yrs (Group II) and 6-15yrs (Group III). Group II and III received more watering, wetting and bathing. Frequency of wetting and watering was highest in summer season. Actual training starts at 6 years of age and train the elephants for various purposes. It was evident that young elephants are fed above the nutritional requirements and kept idle for most of the time in the year. Boredom was found to be a factor for behavioural anomalies. Major ailments in young ones was diarrhoea were as impaction in adults. One hundred and ninety six animals of University cattle farms of Mannuthy, Thumbunnuzhi and Thiruvazhamkunnu were selected for the study. As per the Unified score card by Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, the animals were judged for frame, dairy character, body capacity, feet• and legs and udder. The type components were again subdivided as described in the scorecard to improve the accuracy of judging score. The body measurements of individual animals like height at withers, body length, chest girth, height at withers, height at pins, length of quarter, width between angles of hook and slope of rump were taken. The animals were categorized into four age groups, four parities and three stages of lactation. The emphasis of each of the components of unified score card to milk production was compared and statistical analysis was carried out as per methods suggested by Snedcor and Cochran (1994). Effects of age, stage of lactation and parity on judging using Unified Score Card were worked out. The body measurements were also correlated with the score and milk yield. Age, parity and stage of lactation were found to be nonsignificant for final score. The scores of frame, dairy character and udder for different age groups showed no significant difference, whereas, scores of body capacity and feet and legs differed significantly. The scores of dairy character and body capacity differed significantly with parity. No significant difference was shown for scores of frame, feet and legs and udder. Frame was found to be positively correlated with other components, the least being with udder (r=0.127) and highest with feet and legs (r =0.254) which was highly significant (p<0.01). Dairy character was significantly correlated with body capacity (r=0.169) and feet and legs(r=0.2S4) in addition to frame. Feet and legs was the only component to which udder showed positive significant correlation (pAge was found to be not significant for lactation yield (P~O.OS). The means of lactation yield differed significantly for different parities. All the type components were found to be positively correlated with lactation yield, all being significant. The standardized partial regression coefficients were highly significant for dairy character, udder. and body capacity whereas non significant regression coefficients were obtained for frame and feet and legs. Udder depth was having the highest regression coefficient (~=0.312) which was highly significant (p<0.01). Regression coefficients were significant and positive for skin (0.229), withers (0.188), ribs (0.174) and thighs (0.162). Both age and parity had significant positive correlation on body weight. Body weight was significantly (p<0.0 1) correlated with lactation yield with r=0.244. Height at withers, length, hip width girth and height at hook showed significant difference with age (p:SO.OS).The height at pins and slope were found to be not affected significantly by age. All the measurements except slope were significant and positive in correlation with body capacity. All height measurements, length and girth was found to be positively correlated with frame (p<0.0 1). Final score was having significant positive correlation with all height measurements (p:SO.OS). It was concluded that although the score card was found to be reliable on the production of crossbred cows of Kerala, the emphasis placed on type components was not in full agreement with what was prescribed by the purebred Dairy Cattle Association Dairy Cow Unified Score Card. Hence it was suggested that more weightage could be given to body capacity and dairy character compromising weightage on frame and feet & legs which necessitated further studies in this regard.
