dc.description.abstractThe present investigation entitled “Effect of Backpacks on Health of Selected High School Going Students” was undertaken by conducting survey among sixty High School going boys and girls between 13- 16 yrs of age who were using backpacks. Thirty boys and 30 girls each studying in high school (8th, 9th, and 10th standards) from different schools of Parbhani town were selected for this study. The main objectives of the study were to assess the problems faced by selected school going students due to backpacks, to assess the physical load of selected school going students while carrying backpacks, to assess the exertion perceived by selected school going students while carrying backpacks and to study the body posture of selected school going students due to backpack. The findings revealed that majority of boys and girls of 8th, 9th and 10th standard sometimes felt their backpacks were heavy, while boys and girls of 8th standard felt that carrying school backpack were moderately exerting and girls of 9th and 10th standard felt it was very exerting while carrying school backpack. The mean of working angles and angle of deviation of 8th, 9th and 10th standard girls at cervical, elbow and lumbar joint were more as compared to boys. Findings regarding musculoskeletal problems revealed that boys and girls of 8th, 9th and 10th standard experienced very severe pain in hand, shoulders and neck. With respect to the psychological problems boys and girls of 8th, 9th and 10th standard experienced higher values of frequencies for fatigue, craving for food, stress, headache, frustration and anxiety. Health problems of selected boys and girls of 8th, 9th and 10th standard indicated higher values of frequencies for tiredness, stress on spine, red marks on shoulder, chest pain, headache, stiff neck and numbness. The practice of wearing the backpack on both the shoulders and position it high on the back or upper back (Position C) of the body is the right way to get maximum comfort to the body and to ensure a safe and healthy posture. It is also advisable for them to choose a backpack designed with shoulder straps placed distant from each other for the comfort of placement of backpack at position C.en_US
