Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken to study the phenotypic characteristics of total 500 goats belonging to five different age group collected from 5 different villages of Umred tahsil of Nagpur district. It was observed that the female population was higher in all age groups. Coat colour of the goat has been found mixed colour i.e. brown mixed with black or white in colour. Majority of animals having the eye colour found to be brownish. The forehead pattern of majority of male and female goat was observed to be convex. The horn shape of goat was observed mostly as straight backward. Ear were pendulous in orientation in goat. Majority of goat possessed bunchy type of tail. Majority of the local goats did not have wattles and beard. The results obtained from this investigation found that the means for length of head, horn, ear, and tail were 17.26 ± 0.12, 10.06 ± 0.20, 20.78 ± 0.30, and 16.06 ± 0.10 cm, respectively. In body measurements, maximum average chest girth (74.25 ± 0.27 cm), body length (62.52 ± 0.27 cm) and height at wither (74.94 ± 0.50 cm). Body weight in goat for different age group were found to be 13.62 ± 0.21 (0 to 6 month), 18.06 ± 0.10 (6 to 9 month), 20.03 ± 0.23 (9 to 12 month), 25.86 ± 0.21 (12 to 18 month) and 34.51 ± 0.30 kg. The animals in the study had an average lactation milk yield 707.5 ± 18.02 gm and lactation period 134 ± 1.58 days.
Description
The body measurements viz., body length, chest girth, height at withers had high correlation with body weight this may be used as selection criteria for breed development. Selection based upon body measurements should improve the milk and meat production. However, further research is needed to investigate the relationship between body weights with body measurement in selected local adult goats in different tahsil of Nagpur district at different age group with maximum numbers of observations. Their by, it helps in nutritional security and livelihood of poor rural people.
