dc.description.abstractfield experiment was conducted during rabi 1997 — 98 on sandy loam soils of S.V.AgriculturalCollege,Tirupation“IntegratedWeedManagementInRabiIrrigatedTomato (LycopersiconesculentumMill)”.The experiment waslaidout in arandomised block design with threereplications.ThetestcultivarwasPusa Rubi,adeterminate mediumduration variety.There were twelve treatments viz., pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha'l, metolachlor@2.0kga.i.ha", pre plant incorporation of fluchloralin @ 1.2 kg a.i. ha", combinationsofpendimethalin @0.75kga.i.ha"l+metolachlor @1.0kga.i.ha‘Iaspre— emergence,pendimethalin @ 0.75 kga.i. ha"l + fluchloralin @ 0.6 kg a.i. ha" aspreplant incorporation,metolachlor @ 1.0 kga.i. ha'l + fluchloralin @ 0.6 kg a.i. ha'I as pre plant incorporation,pendimethalin@1.5kga.i.ha‘I +onehandweeding at 30 daysafter transplanting (DAT), metolachlor @ 2.0 kga.i.ha"+ one hand weeding at 30 DAT, fluchloralin @1.2kgailia'l +onehandweedingat30DA'l‘,weedy'check,farmerspracticewith twohandWeedingsat20and40DATandWeedfreecheck. Leastweeddensity,weeddrymatterandhighestweedcontrolefficiencywere observedinfannerspracticewithtwohandweedingsat20and40DAT,followedby metolachlor@2.0kga.i.ha'I+onehandweedingat30DAT. Thepredominantandperennialweedofthecamental fieldwasCypcnar mimic/us. Metoluchlm(it)2.0kgailm' wasmostclt‘cctwcagainst.purplenutscdgc. Completecontrolofthebroadleavedweedsandappreciablecontrol ofgrassyweeds wasachievedbypendiinetlmlin@1.5kg,a.i.ha".Fluchloralin@1.2kga.i.ha'lwas moderateinthecontrolofgrassesandthebroadleavedweedsbutwashietlective againstsedges.Integratedweedcontrolmeasuresbysupplementingonehandweeding to pros-emergent application ofall the three herbicides tried viz, pendiinethalin, nietolachlorand tluchloralinat theirrespectivedosesweresuperiortoherbicides alonetreatmentsandalsotheircombinations. Superiorleafareaindex,drymatterproductionandfruityieldwererecorded inmetolachlor+onehandweedingtreatmentexceptoverabsoluteweedfreecheck. Thebenefit,cost,ratioandnetreturnswerehighestinmetolachlor+onehand weeding followed by other two integrated measures viz lmndiinethalin and fluchloralinoverthefarmerpractice. The results of the experiment suggested that for eltective weed management in tomato an integrated measure of combining pre-emergence application of chemical and hand weeding at 30 days altertransplantation isan absolutenecessity. Wwdcontrol bychemicalsalonewas inelTective.Traditional practiceofhandweedingaloneanumberoftimesisuneconomical.en_US
