A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Farm, B. A. College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during the rabi season of 2003-2004 to study the "Influence of FYM, Phosphorus and Zinc on Growth and Yield of Grain Amarantfius (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) under Middle Gujarat Conditions" The soil of experimental plots was loamy-sand in texture, having good drainage with pH 7.8. The soil was low in organic matter and in available nitrogen, while medium in available phosphorus and high in available potassium. The experiment comprised of two levels of FYM (F0: 0t FYM ha-1 and F1: 10t FYM ha-1) in main plots, with combination of three levels of phosphorus (PO: 0 kg P2O5 ha-1, P1: 25 kg P2O5 ha-1 and P2: 50 kg P2O5 ha-1) and two levels of zinc (Zn0: 0 kg ZnS04 ha-1 and Zn,: 15 kg ZnS04 ha-1) in sub-plots. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four replications. was decreased with increasing level of phosphorus. Highest zinc content was recorded under 0kg P2O5ha-1. Plant population recorded at harvest did not differ significantly due to application of zinc. Zinc application in grain amaranth had significant effect on almost all attributes studied during the course cf investigation, wherein Zn1 (15 kg ZnS04 ha-1) showed significant superiority over Zno (0 kg ZnS04 ha-1) in plant height at 30, 60 and 90 DAS. While, days to maturity, grain yield per plant and harvest index were significantly higher under application of zinc @ 15 kg ZnS04 ha-1. On the contrary, days to 50 % flowering and lodging per cent were reduced with application with zinc (Zn1). However, variation in length of main panicle and test weight was absent. Among the quality parameters, the nitrogen, zinc and protein content in grain were improved significantly by zinc fertilization, while, the phosphorus content decreased significantly with application of zinc. from the foregoing results it is pertinent that grain amaranth variety GA-2 gave highest yield as well as net returns when, it was manure with 10 tonnes FYM and fertilized with 50 kg P2O5 and 15 kg ZnS04 per hectare under loamy sand soils of middle Gujarat.en_US
