Abstract The present investigation entitled “Studies on the effect of mulching on weed density and yield of Chilli (Capsicum annum L.)” was conducted at Horticulture Complex, Dept. of Horticulture, J.N.K.V.V. Jabalpur (M.P.) during rabi season of the year 2013-14. The experiment consisting of twelve treatments on chilli variety Suryamukhi transplanted in plots (3 X 3 m2) in Randomized Completely block design with three replications. The row and plant spacing was maintained at 60 cm and 50 cm respectively and each plot accommodated 30 plants. Studies on weed population by quadrate method, while, morphological, phenological, yield and its attributing parameters were recorded on 5 random selected plants. The objectives of the present investigation were to study the effect of mulches on growth, yield & its attributing characters of chilli, to find out the response of different mulches on weed flora & its control in chilli and to work out the most economical treatment for weed control in chilli. The analysis of variance was calculated using formula proposed by Panse and Sukhatme (1963). Weed control efficiency was calculated by the formula as suggested by Mani et al. (1973) and weed index was worked out by Gill and Kumar (1966). On the basis of present investigation, it is concluded that Treatment T8 (Black polythene mulch) was recorded maximum morphological, phenological, yield and its attributing traits in chilli variety suryamukhi. On the basis of weed density, relative density and better weed control efficiency was recorded minimum with the treatment T8 (Black polythene mulch). The maximum fruit yield 108.55 q/ha, net return of Rs 1,11,975 /ha along with cost benefit ratio of 1:3.20 were found under the treatment T8 (black polythene mulch).
