Because of the transmission of the virus through semen, the infection is of great concern for the dairy animals, especially when artificial insemination (AI) is commonly practiced. BHV-1 is associated with several clinical manifestations including rhinotracheitis, vulvovaginitis, balanoposthitis, conjunctivitis and generalized systemic infections.
