Normal deterioration in food grains under adverse condition of storage is discoloration, sprouting, development of undesirable odour, mustiness, microbial growth, cake formation, contamination etc. The food grains storage losses were assessed for ten years period from 2008-2018.The survey was carried out to assess the food grain losses during storage in godowns of FCI, Ranchi, identify the factors responsible for losses, suggest measures to reduce these losses and for SWOT Analysis of FCI, Ranchi. Based on the survey results, it was found that the losses of food grains in the godown of all the depots were 36% in PEG-II, Nagari, 30% in ARDC, Tatisilwai, 21% in FSD, Ranchi and 13% in PEG-I, Nagari. The factors responsible for storage losses of food grains were moisture content, relative humidity, temperature, insects, pests, mites, rats, etc. The measures required to reduce storage losses are storing grain at appropriate moisture content, adoption of air tight and rat proof storage structures, aeration of grains, aeration of food grains at suitable interval and chemical treatment of food grains. Based on SWOT analysis, it was found that better storage management is required to reduce food grain losses during storage. The study concluded that there is a need of proper grains storage management system by Food Corporation of India (FCI), Ranchi to reduce food grains losses.en-USnullASSESSMENT OF LOSSES OF FOOD GRAINS STORED BY FOOD CORPORATION OF INDIA (FCI) RANCHIThesis
