The occurrence and severity of the disease in Kerala was reported from 1978 onwards. The symptoms of the disease is characterised by water soaked lesions, bacterial exudations, dark brown patches with yellow halo, marginal infection, shot hole type symptoms, defoliation, stem and petiole infection.
