The level of diversification of crop enterprises reflects the extent of economic development in the rural sector. Diversification is an essential strategy that minimizes risk due to crop failures, increases income from agriculture, increases employment, helps in the environmental conservation and earns foreign exchange. The present study was undertaken with the objectives of estimating the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) and Instability Indices (II) in area, production and productivity of major crops to know the changes in cropping pattern and to analyze the nature and extent of crop diversification in Middle Gujarat. The study area, Middle Gujarat comprises of nine districts viz., Ahmedabad, Anand, Botad, Chhotaudaipur, Dahod, Kheda, Mahisagar, Panchmahals and Vadodara. The present study was based on secondary data, which was collected from the government website for a period of 10 years from 2008-09 to 2017-18.
