The objectives of the study were (i) to study the nutritional requirement (N, P and K) of sugarcane, (ii) to study the effect of fertilizer N, P and FYM levels and soil test on the yield of sugarcane and juice quality, (iii) to determine the nutrient use efficiency of soil and fertilizer, (iv) to estimate the contribution of FYM in terms of fertilizer N and P and (v) to evolve the basis for making fertilizer recommendation for a given yield based on soil test for sugarcane crop under different levels of FYM in Vertisol. The experiment was laid out in three fertility gradient strips already created during previous Kharif season 2006. Thirty six treatments consisting of 4 x 3 x 3 factorial combination of fertilizer N, P and FYM were superimposed over each fertility strip (Lo, L1 and L2). Co-JN -86141 variety of sugarcane was taken as the test crop. The crop response to added nutrients were worked out and various regression analyses were performed after the crop harvest. Linear Response and Plateau (LRP) and Quadratic Response and Plateau (QRP) models were used to relate the cane yield with soil test and fertilizer doses which resulted in significantly high R2 values suggesting their suitability. Sugarcane required 0.164 kg N, 0.034 kg P and 0.27 kg K to produce one quintal of fresh cane. The LRP model considered constant nutrient use efficiencies for each level of soil test and fertilizer dose, however, QRP model estimated variable soil and fertilizer efficiencies. The special feature of these models was the consideration of yield plateau, which make them suitable under resource constraint situations. The fertilizer prescription based on soil test for different levels of FYM was estimated using LRP for N and QRP for P. Fertilizer (N and P2O5) adjustment equations formulated by these models for specific yield target (Y) without and with FYM application are Without FYM: FN = 0.616 Y- 1.343 SN FP2O5 = 208 – (43418 - 43 Y) 1/2 – 4.79 SP With 5 t/ha FYM: FN = 0.648 Y- 1.583 SN FP2O5 = 164.5 – (27052.5 - 27.86 Y) 1/2 – 4.40 SP With 10 t/ha FYM: FN = 0.60 Y- 1.56 SN FP2O5 = 192 – (36857-34.6 Y)1/2 – 4.89 SP Dept. of Soil Science V.N.
