The primary data were collected from 60 layer farmers and 140 broiler farmers for the period July 2007 to February 2009 in three districts of Punjab state viz. Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Muktsar. The results revealed that the total variable costs per bird were maximum on small layer farms (Rs. 655.83) and minimum on large layer farms (Rs.612.79) and the net returns per bird over the variable costs were maximum on large layer farms (Rs.141.27) and minimum on small layer farms (Rs.67.60). Further, the total variable costs per bird were maximum on small broiler farms with Rs. 77.37 and again minimum on large broiler farms with Rs. 62.51and the net returns per bird over the variable costs were maximum on large broiler farms (Rs.17.96) and minimum on small broiler farms (Rs.15.26). The analysis showed that the production efficiency of layer as well as broiler farms increased with the increase in the size due to economies of scale. On the basis of net present value, benefit-cost ratio and internal rate of returns, the investment on layer as well as broiler farming was found to be most profitable in case of large farms. The marketing channel Producer-Retailer-Consumer was the most efficient channel for eggs as well as for broilers. The total marketing margins, costs and the price spread was lower whereas the producer’s share in consumer’s rupee and marketing efficiency was higher in this channel. The study further indicated that India has comparative advantage over Germany, Indonesia, Denmark, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Japan in export of eggs to these countries provided it fulfill the quality standards being fixed by the importing countries. Similarly, India has comparative advantage over countries namely Luxembourg, Nepal and Nigeria in the case of broiler meat. Thus, the poultry farming is a profitable venture and has a bright future in the Punjab agriculture for improving the economic status of farming community.ennullPoultry Farming in Punjab: An Economic Evaluation and Export CompetitivenessThesis
