R. 2004 ABSTRACT Smt.JAYASHREE A. HANDIGOL MAJOR ADVISOR The present study was undertaken in Coorg district of Karnataka state where anthuriums are grown in a large area. The primary data was collected for the year 2003-04, by personal interview method with the help of a pre-tested schedule, on the aspects of costs, returns, problems in production and marketing of anthuriums from both the organised and unorganised sectors of cultivation. The data was also collected from the consumers regarding the quality preferences for anthuriums. The secondary data regarding the exports of anthuriums was collected from the companies involved in the exports in Bangalore. The results revealed that anthurium cultivation is capital intensive. The cost of establishment in the organised sector was Rs.66,69,751.79 per hectare and Rs. 19,64,635.16 per hectare in the unorganised sector. The total cost of cultivation was Rs.l 1,56,161.34 and Rs.3,27,016.52 per hectare respectively in the organised and unorganised sectors. There was an increasing returns to investment in both the sectors. The investment analysis was done using NPW, BCR, IRR and PBP. The NPW was positive indicating the profitability of anthurium cultivation in both the sectors. The BCR and IRR was also high.
