MATHAD 2001 MAJOR ADVISOR : Dr. M.M. RAO ABSTRACT Field experiments were carried out at Kotur village, about 10 k.m. away from UAS, Dharwad for two years (1997-99) to standardise the production technology for strawberry. Experiments on dates of planting revealed that August planting gave higher yield (> 8.0 t/ha) followed by June planting. The marketable yield, fruit weight, TSS and TSS / acid ratio were higher in August planting than June planting. The study on plant population indicated that the highest plant population of 1,11,111 plants / ha (30 x 30 cm) gave highest yield. The medium population of 55,555 plants / ha (30 x 30 cm) recorded lesser yield but recorded highest fruit weight, TSS, TSS/acid ratio and colour development. In case of nutritional experiment, the fertilizer schedule of 100:100:100 kg NPK/ ha with vermicompost (5t / ha) recorded highest yield (over 9.8 t / ha). The marketable yield and cost: benefit ratio (1:1.19) were also higher. The studies on mulches indicated that all the types of mulches used increased the yield over control. The highest yield (over 101 / ha) and cost; benefit ratio (1:1.09) was recorded in white over black laminated polyethylene mulch than other plastic mulches. In case of organic mulches, coirpith performed better than paddy straw. All polyethylene mulches favoured higher leaf area, fruit weight, TSS and anthocyanin pigments.ennullSTUDIES ON STANDARDISATION OF CULTURAL PRACTICES FOR STRAWBERRY (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.)Thesis
