dc.description.abstract | The present investigation entitled “Biomass and Carbon sequestration potential of Multipurpose Trees at Ranchi, Jharkhand” was carried out during the year 2022-23. The experiment site is located at longitude 23º26′ N and latitude 85º20′ E, 641.29 m above the mean sea level. The experiment was established in year 2018 and data was collected at the age of five years, with the following objectives to assess biomass of multipurpose trees; to estimate the carbon sequestration of multipurpose trees and to assess the physico-chemical properties of soil of seven multipurpose tree species. The experiment was established with seven treatments and three replications viz., T1: Azadirachta indica, T2: Melia azedarach, T3: Pongamia pinnata, T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus, T5: Gmelina arborea, T6: Dalbergia sissoo and T7: Acacia auriculiformis. After five years the result indicated that the height of multipurpose tree was greater in T7: Acacia auriculiformis 10.32 m followed by T6: Dalbergia sissoo 5.67 m and lowest in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 2.01 m whereas the DBH of multipurpose tree was greater in T7: Acacia auriculiformis 10.97 cm followed by T5: Gmelina arborea 6.01 cm and lowest in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 2.11 cm. The basal area of multipurpose tree was greater in T7: Acacia auriculiformis0.945 m2 tree-1 followed by T5: Gmelina arborea 0.284 m2 tree-1 and lowest in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 0.035 m2 tree-1. The volume of multipurpose trees was greater in T7: Acacia auriculiformis 191.21 m3 ha-1 followed by T5: Gmelina arborea 29.12 m3 ha-1and lowest inT4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 1.40 m3 ha-1. The aboveground biomass, belowground biomass and total biomass of multipurpose tree was greater in T7: Acacia auriculiformis 248.45, 64.60 and 313.04 t ha-1 followed by T6: Dalbergia sissoo 33.35, 8.67 and 42.02 t ha-1 and lowest in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 1.60, 0.42 and 2.02 t ha-1, respectively. The total carbon stock was recorded highest under the treatment T7: Acacia auriculiformis 167.94 t ha-1 followed by T6: Dalbergia sissoo 30.64 t ha-1 and least was found in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 10.87 t ha-1 whereas, the total carbon sequestration was highest observed in treatment T7: Acacia auriculiformis 616.34 t ha-1 followed by T6: Dalbergia sissoo 112.45 t ha-1 least was found in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 39.89 t ha-1. The soil organic carbon in 0-15 cm depth greater was found in T7: Acacia auriculiformis 0.529% followed by T3: Pongamia pinnata 0.522% and lowest in T1: Azadirachta indica 0.405% whereas in depth of 15-30 cm greater soil organic carbon was reported in T3: Pongamia pinnata 0.536% followed by T1: Azadirachta indica 0.434% and lowest in T4: Artocarpus heterophyllus 0.324%. The maximum biomass, total carbon stock and total carbon sequestration were found in Acacia auriculiformis 313.04, 167.94 and 616.34 t ha-1, respectively. Acacia auriculiformis tree performs best among all seven-treatment followed by Dalbergia sissoo, Gmelina arborea, and these three species recommend for the plantation in the community land of Jharkhand to produce fuel wood, fodder, and timber. | |
