Abstract
ABSTRACT : The study on the pathology of female reproductive system of buffaloes in and around Tirupati was undertaken to provide useful information to field level functionaries, practicing veterinarians and the academicians involved in improving the reproductive capacity of Indian livestock. For the present study, four hundred and twenty five genitalia of non-descript buffalo cows aged four to ten years with no breeding history were procured from the animals slaughtered in and around Tirupati. Gross and histopathological studies were made and the lesions were reported. Pathological lesions were observed in 254 genitalia out of 425 examined accounting for an incidence of 59.76 per cent. Gross lesions could be observed only in 88 (20.71 %) out of 254 affected genital organs. The incidences of pathological lesions in descending order were uteri (30.82%), ovaries (17.88%), oviducts (16.00%), cervix (5.41%) and vagina (2.35%). The various ovarian lesions observed were hypoplastic ovaries (0.71%), para-ovarian cysts (1.65%), oophoritis (2.35%), polyoogonia (0.24%), atretic follicles (2.82%), follicular cysts (5.41%), luteal cysts (0.47%), cystic corpus luteum (0.71%), embedded corpus luteum (0.94%), ovaro-bursal adhesions (1.41%), folliculoid (0.24%), dermoids (0.71%) and granulosa cell tumor (0.24%). Of 425 genitalia, fallopian tubes of 20 buffaloes (4.71%) were found blocked. Chronic salpingitis in 11.06 per cent and mucosal cysts in 4.94 per cent of the cases were observed. Of the total 30.82 per cent of uterine lesions, the different pathological lesions included acute endometritis (13.18%), sub-acute endometritis (2.82%) and chronic endometritis (14.82%). Cervical lesions included Nabothian follicle (0.24%) and cervicitis (5.18%) while vaginal lesions included vaginal melanosis (0.47%) and vaginitis (1.88%). Fifty four genitalia (12.71%) showed mixed pathological conditions out of 425 she-buffaloes examined. The various mixed lesions observed were oophoritis with adhesions (1.41%), acute endometritis with salpingitis (0.94%), acute endometritis with mucosal cysts (1.41%), acute endometritis with vaginitis (0.47%), sub-acute endometritis with cervicitis (1.18%), chronic endometritis with adhesion and oophoritis (0.47%), chronic endometritis with follicular cysts (3.29%), chronic endometritis with luteal cysts (0.47%) and chronic endometritis with salpingitis (3.06%). The incidence of pathological lesions was more in uteri followed by ovaries, which would play major role in buffalo breeding. Different types of endometritis were observed in uteri that would be one of the major causes for early embryonic mortality. Among the ovarian lesions, cystic ovarian degeneration was commonly observed.
