Abstract
The present study entitled, “Studies on growth, flowering and vase life of gerbera varieties (Gerbera jamesonii Bolus) under different growing conitions” was carried out in four different growing conditions viz. polyhouse, insect proof net house, shade net house, open field and varieties viz. Szogun, Salsa, Kormoran and Feliks at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during the year 2019-2020. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Observations were recorded on growth, flowering and vase life parameters. The results showed that both growing conditions and varieties have significant effect on almost all the parameters of growth, flowering and vase life..While studying effect of growing conditions on vegetative parameters, plant spread, (68.55cm ), number of leaves (22.67) and leaf length (35.88 ) were maximum under poly house while plant height was maximum under shade net. Among the varieties Szogan recorded maximum plant spread ( 74.95 cm) and leaf length (37.38 cm) . Whereas, Salsa showed maximum number of leaves per plant (21.47), plant height (32.73 cm) and leaf width (14.68). In flowering parameters ,minimum days to bud initiation (99.18) and number of days taken for bud imitation to harvest (32.15 days ), maximum stalk length (59.76 cm ) Stalk diameter ( 6.99 cm) , flower diameter (12.12 cm ) , diameter of flower disc (2.37 cm) , number of ray floret per flower (62.33) , number of flowers (8.7) , length of ray floret and dry weight were maximum under polyhouse while fresh flower weight ( 40.58 g) was maximum under insect proof net house. Among varieties Szogun performed better with respect to days to bud initiation, number of days taken for bud imitation to harvest, stalk diameter , number of flowers, length of ray floret , fresh flower weight and dry weight while Kormoran had maximum stalk length, Salsa recorded with maximum number of ray florets where as Feliks had maximum flower disc diameter and length of ray floret. Similarly polyhouse grown Szogun flowers had more water uptake (199.65 ml) maximum days taken to flower drooping (13.81 days), days taken for petal discoloration (8.50 days). days taken for petal shrivelling (10.43 days) and vase life (10.25 days). While among chemicals , flower placed in 8-HQC 200 ppm had more water uptake (221.51 ml), maximum days taken to flower drooping (15.47 days), days taken for petal discoloration (9.06 days), days taken for petal shriveling (12.50 days) and vase life (11.25 days).
