Abstract

Extension and Communication Minor: Horticulture (Vegetable Science) Thesis Title: “A Study on Utilization Pattern of Communication Channels by Farmers for Farming Purpose in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh” Advisor: Dr. Dan Singh Department: Agricultural Extension Education ABSTRACT The present study was carried out during the year 2023 in two blocks of Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The present study was conducted on 96 respondents and data were collected through personal interview method with the help of interview schedule. The study revealed that the majority of the farmers (52.08%) belonged to middle age group, (28.12%) were having education up to high school level, (42.71%) belonged to other backward caste, (42.71%) were having 2-5 acre of operational land, all of the farmers (100.00%) had khurpi/fawara, followed by pumping set (39.58%), (57.29%) were having medium level of social participation and (42.71%) were having medium income. The study also revealed that television with mean score of 1.94, occupied I rank among the respondents for receiving information regarding latest innovations and practices followed by friends, relative and neighbours with mean score of 1.89, occupied II rank. It was found that majority of the farmers (60.42%) exhibit medium level of utilization of communication channels followed by low level of utilization (20.83%) and remaining belonged to high level of utilization of communication (18.75%). The study revealed that field day with mean score of 1.81 occupied I rank and considered as most effective source of communication for receiving information regarding latest innovations and practices. It was found that majority (69.79%) of the farmers considered communication channel as medium level of effectiveness for accessing agricultural information. It was found out that the variable age, education, operational land holding, farm mechanization, social participation and annual income had positive and significant relationship at 0.01 level of significance with utilization of communication channels by the farmers while variable caste had negative and significant relationship at 0.01 level of significance with utilization of communication channels by the farmers. It was observed that the major problem faced by farmers was unavailability of farm magazines (96.86%), followed by unavailability of information service centres (91.67%).
