Abstract
The present study entitled "Economics of Threshing and Storage Operations of Paddy in Guntur District of Andhra pradesh" was undertaken.with the objectives of studying the different threshing and storage methods being followed in the selected mandals, whether losses differ significantly between size groups and operations, costs and benefits of the different threshing and storage methods and problems in adopting the modern methods. The investigation was carried out in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. A sample of 80 farmers was selected from the four selected villages by following three stage purposive sampling technique. The study is related to the agricultural year 1996— '97. The emphasis in this study was mainly on th methods of threshing and storage being followed in the selected area and quantitative loss of food. grains recorded. Tabular‘ Analysis, Analysis of variance and frequencydistributionwere the analytical tools used. The study revealed that the farmers in the selected area were adopting the traditional methods of threshing and storage. Threshing by tractor is the popular method of threshng in all the villages. Puri, Gade and storing in Room were the three methods being followed and most of the farmers used Puri method followed by Room method and very few adopted Gade method. The study also found that the storage of rice had a direct relationship with the increase in size of holding. With the increase in the size of holding, the storage of rice for consumption was found to have negative relationship while the storage of rice for speculation had a positive relationship. An increasing trend from small to large farm was observed in total postharvest losses in all villages except Murukondapadu where losses in the large farms was less than small farms. The results of Analysis of variance employed to find out the variation inlossesbetweendifferent operationswas observed tobe significant at 5 per cent level of significance. The cost of threshing with a hired tractor was higher when compared to owned tractor. The cost of storage/quintal of paddy stored is highest in case of Gade and lowest for Puri. Among the total cost of storage interest on the value of the stored grain is the major cost. The gross returns and net economic return to farmers was found to be highest in room storage and lowest in case of Puri method of storage. The average fixed cost was found to be highest in Gade method and lowest for Puri method. The average variable cost was found to be highest in room storage and lowest value was found in Puri method. ResulUs of the opinion survey indicated that the main constraints in adopting the improved methods of threshing were wastage of straw due to threshing by threshers, higher initial and maintenance cost and lack of knowledge about the threshers and technical guidance. The constraints in adopting the improved methods of storage were lack of proper knowledge and technical guidance, high initial andmaintenance cost and lack of innovation among farmers. {Introd
