dc.description.abstractThe present study entitled ―Therapeutic Efficacy of Aqueous Extract of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) on Oxidative Stress in Horses‖ was carried out in the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (PGIVER) Jaipur. After initial deworming and clinical examination, twenty apparently healthy, non-pregnant, indigenous adult female horses having same age group (8-10 years) were selected from a private equine farm located in Jaipur district of Rajasthan and divided into two groups i.e. treatment group and control group having ten animals in each group. All the animals were examined for various clinical parameters viz. Rectal temperature, Respiratory rate and Pulse rate and various haemato-biochemical and biomarkers of oxidative stress were studied to find out the effect of exercise and of aqueous extract of Ocimum santum (Tulsi) on these pameters. To study the effect of exercise, all animals of both groups were given trot exercise for 2 hours (for approximately 30 km) for one time i.e. on 0th day only and Pre and Post exercise samples from all animals were collected. To study the efficacy of Ocimum santum (Tulsi) on clinico-hemato-biochemical and on various biomarkers of oxidative stress, all the horses belongs to treatment group were orally administered (o.i.d.) with aqueous extract of Ocimum santum @150 mg/kg body weight for fifteen days. A significant (P≤0.05) effect of exercise was observed on all clinical parameters whereas a non-significant effect of treatment of aqueous extract of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) was observed for these clinical parameters. Likewise statistical analysis of pre and post exercise values of Hb, PCV and TEC also revealed a significant (P≤0.05) increase after exercise however the values of TLC, DLC and Platlet count reveled a non significant (P≥0.05) increase after exercise. The aqueous extract of Ocimum santum (Tulsi) shown a significant (P≤0.05) effect on Hb, PCV and TEC whereas a non-significant effect was observed for the values of TLC, DLC, Platelet count and for all biochemical parameters. The results of present study revealed a significant (P≤0.05) effect of exercise on malondialddehyde levels only whereas the values of catalase, reduced glutathione and vitamin C showed a non-significant effect of exercise and of aqueous extract of Ocimum santum (Tulsi). In the present study it was concluded that treatment of aqueous extract of Ocimum santum (Tulsi) have positive effects in horses, reflected by an increase in physiological performance, alertness and haemopoetic activity might be due to increased hemoglobin, PCV and total erythrocyte count.en_US
