The research study entitled “Growth and Instability in Area, Production and Productivity of Major Rabi crops in Rajasthan” was aimed to study trend, growth rate and instability in area, production and productivity of major rabi crops (wheat, barley, gram and rapeseed & mustard) in Rajasthan. The secondary data of time series covering the period from 1988 to 2017 were used to achieve the stated objective. During the last 30 years (1988-2017), the growth rate of area of wheat, barley rapeseed & mustard were positive and growth rate of area of gram was negative while production, productivity of wheat, barley, gram and rapeseed & mustard showed positive growth rate. During the study period i.e. 1988 to 2017, the wheat crop recorded as positive and significant trend in the area while barley was found in negative and significant trend in area during the study period. Trend in the production was found positive and significant in wheat and gram during the study period while negative and significant trend in production was found in barley. The trend of yield was found positive and significant for gram crop during the study period. The trend of productivity was found negative and significant of wheat and rapeseed & mustard during the study period. During the last 30 years (1988-2017), Gram was found as highest instability in area and production considering all instability indices. In case of productivity gram emerged with highest instability in context of instability index I2 (detrained value), I3 (cv value) and barley was found of highest instability in productivity in context of instability index I1 (instability index main deviation). Barley emerged with lowest instability crop in area considering instability index I1 (instability index main deviation). Wheat was found as lowest instability crops in area in context of instability index I2 (detrained value), I3 (cv value). Wheat shows lowest instability in production in context of instability index I2 (detrained value), I3 (cv value) while rapeseed & mustard was found in lowest instability crop in production in context of instability index I1 (instability index main deviation). Wheat was found in lowest instability in productivity considering all instability indices. It has been seen that instability was found more in gram and rapeseed & mustard where assured irrigation facility and price policy regarding minimum support price was not firm and constant. The present study does make useful indication in streamlining the instability in area, production and productivity of major rabi crops in Rajasthan.en_US
