Abstract
The project study was carried out in Nashik district of Maharashtra for Prathamesh
Wines Pvt.ltd. The title of the project is “Production constraints and marketing of wine grape
varieties in Nashik region (Maharashtra).” The objectives of the project are
1) To analyze the constraints in production of wine grape varieties in the study area.
2) To understand the farmers awareness level about quality aspects of grape production.
3) To study the marketing channel and estimate the price spread at each channel.
4) To indentify the marketing constraints faced by growers of wine variety grape.
Scope of the study: In recent past general trend all over the country is towards diversification of
crops, because of number of factors like changing weather pattern, environmental concern,
greater profit motive, changing market and consumer preferences. In the process, the gainer in
terms of expansion is horticulture including viticulture.
In India the availability of natural resources like favorable and diverse climatic conditions
permit production and availability of a large wine varietal grapes round the year. Cheap labor
leads to reduction in production costs, increasing access of the consumer to good quality wine at
affordable prices, besides increasing our competitiveness in the export markets. Viticulture being
a new concept in the agri-business, took some time for scientific commercial wine varietal grape
production to take roots, but with the appreciation of its potential as an economically viable
diversification option, its growth is slowly stabilizing. The government also has, during the last
few years, recognized viticulture as an important segment for developmental initiatives.
This study aims at identifying the constraints faced by wine varietal grape growers and
the awareness levels of the farmers regarding quality aspects. The study is aimed at providing
insights in to the market by estimating price spread and indentifying marketing constraints.
The project study reveals that most of the farmers have large sized land holdings among
members of the society, though large sized farmers are more. To increase area under wine
varietal grape cultivation companies should concentrate more on these farmers.
Wide ranges of varieties are available but most of the planting material is susceptible to
disease and pests. Disease and pest infestation is major problems faced by growers in grape
cultivation which require regular spraying of fungicide, pesticide and continuous vigil for early
detection of disease and pest infestation.
Thrips and Flea beetles are the major pests where as Mealy bugs and Leaf hoppers are
minor pests infesting grape in study area. In case of diseases Powdery mildew and Downy
mildew is major disease observed in study area followed by Anthracnose and Bacterial infect
leaves is minor disease in study area.
In case of pests majority of the farmers prefer prophylactic measures for Thrips, Mealy bugs
followed by Leaf hoppers and Flea beetles where as very few farmers prefer curative measure for
the pest control.
With regard to diseases majority of the farmers prefer prophylactic measures for Downy
mildew and Powdery mildew followed by Anthracnose and Bacterial infect leaves where as very
few of the farmers prefer curative measure for Anthracnose and Bacterial infect leaves.
Regarding constraints in marketing it can be said that Lack of credit facilities from
companies and perish ability of the produce is major problem perceived by farmers followed by
non-remunerative price, promptness of payment and transportation where as difficulties in
packaging is not major concerns as for farmers. Organization of the project report
