Abstract
The present study was conducted during 2006-07 in Hubli-Dharwad Municipal
corporation area, comprised of survey method and experimental procedure. The main
objectives of this study were to know the clothing problems and preferences of the mothers of
cerebral palsy children and to assess the comfortability of the specially designed functional
garments. Five girl children with divergent state of physically impairment due to cerebral
palsy (Quadriplegia) belonging to the age group of 8-12 years and their mothers formulated
the sample for survey. A pre-tested self-structured questionnaire was used to elicit the
information. The results of the survey indicated that majority of the mothers preferred twopiece
garments with soft and pliable, dark coloured, cotton material for the chilren and
furthered expressed that the garments should be comfortably fitted with minimum
embellishments. According to the survey results three functional garments were designed and
constructed. The upper garments had full back opening with press-studs as fasteners, shoulder
straps, medium neckline with plain and puff sleeve and lower garments with elastic
waistband suspenders and soft padding. The samples were given for wear trials and the
period of each wear trail was three consecutive days. The results of the wear study revealed
that shorts with wraparound flap was liked and preferred the most followed by capri with
suspenders and finally trouser. In the nut shell respondents expressed that specially designed
functional garments were functional, attractive, comfortable and even can be used as casual
wear.
