Abstract
The study was being carried out on Bandur sheep farming and allied activities in Mandya district of Karnataka. The Bandur sheep is famous for its meaty conformation and quality. Major objectives of the study were to examine socio-economic status of Bandur sheep rearing farmers, the status of Bandur sheep farming in Mandya district and to examine the marketing practices & consumer preferences of Bandur sheep and meat. Primary data was collected from Bandur sheep rearers through pre tested schedule. Sheep farming is getting importance by farmers due to low investment, easy to rear and earn profits at the early stage. Through this research it is established that the venture is economically feasible and socially acceptable. The Karnataka State Animal Husbandry Department’s study indicates that substantial movement of this breed out of the Mandya district is happening because of increase in irrigated area and encroachment of natural grazing land. There is need for conservation of this breed, which is perhaps one of the exotic meat breed of the country. In this study has been found that socio-economic condition of Bandur sheep farmers is progressively improving. The availability of pure breed is often reported by the farmers. It has been observed that the status of rearing of Bandur sheep is in decreasing phase and the marketing practices are conventional. Proper corrective steps should be initiated to save this exotic breed and depended farmer.
