The present study was carried out in Ludhiana district of Punjab to assess the empowerment status of rural women of livestock based Self Help Groups formed by cooperative society, government and NGO with the objectives viz; to study the group dynamics of Self Help Groups (SHGs), impact of SHGs on knowledge and adoption of scientific livestock farming practices (SLFPs) and constraints faced by SHG members and concerned officials. A multistage random sampling procedure was applied to draw the sample for the study. For meeting the objectives; 120 beneficiaries, 60 non beneficiaries and 30 concerned officials and thus making 210 total respondents for the study were subjected to structured interview schedule. The results regarding general profile showed that among beneficiaries as well as non- beneficiaries, majority of them were found in the medium category w.r.t. variables viz; age, family education status, family size, social participation, herd size, material possession and mass media exposure. The difference between group dynamics was found statistically significant among the beneficiaries of SHGs promoted by different institutes; cooperative society, government and NGO (P<0.05). Beneficiaries of cooperative society were having better group dynamics followed by beneficiaries of NGO and government. The study further revealed that beneficiaries possessed medium level of knowledge (50.00%) about SLFPs followed by high (33.33%) and low (16.67%) whereas among non-beneficiaries most of them (55.00%) were in medium category, followed by low (31.67%) and high (13.33%) As far as adoption was concerned, majority of the beneficiaries had medium (38.33%) followed by high (37.50%) level of adoption, however 45.00 and 11.67 percent of the non-beneficiaries had medium and high level of adoption of Scientific Livestock Farming Practices, respectively. The mean difference in knowledge and adoption between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries was found statistically significant (P<0.05). Variables such as social participation, land holding, livestock-holding, milk production, milk sale, annual income, extension contact and mass media exposure were significantly (P<0.05) and positively correlated with knowledge and adoption level both; whereas variables like family education status and material possession were found significant (P<0.05) and positively correlated with adoption level. The SHGs formed by cooperative society had more knowledge and adoption than the SHGs which were formed by NGO followed by government. The most serious constraints perceived by SHG beneficiaries were low proper price of milk (mean score: 63.40), lack of proper knowledge about purchase of good quantity of feed, fodder and milch animals (mean score: 53.58), problem in taking group decision (mean score: 53.08), lack of trained, field oriented and experienced staff at village level (mean score: 57.64), high cost of cattle feed and mineral mixture (mean score: 56.42), complicated procedures to get loan, subsidy and other benefits (mean score: 53.10), un-organized marketing (mean score: 64.12), lack of marketing skills (mean score: 59.73) and irregular demand of product (mean score: 61.78). The most serious constraints perceived by concerned officials (Cooperative society, Govt. and NGO) were inadequate number of staff at field level, large area of operation under a single supervisor, poor attitude of the members, lack of participation at members level and lack of advertisement at farmer level.en_US
