Abstract
At present, animal feeding, composting, anaerobic digestion (AD), incineration, and
landfills are five methods used for food waste disposal. Among these methods of food
waste disposal, biomethanation seems to be better option as it also provides energy-rich
biomethane. It could reduce the major problem of sanitation and hygiene as well as can
be used as a source of green energy in cities hotels, dhabas, mess of government
organization and student hostels. Food waste requires collection, segregation, and
pretreatment to arrive its pH neutral. In this study, an attempt has been made on the
feasibility of food waste for biomethanation production by using biochar and cow dung
as an additive for enhancing the biomethanation capacity of food waste. This study was
undertaken by operating a 4- l laboratory-scale biodigester having a sampling port for
analysis of pH, alkalinity, TS, VS, COD, and BOD. The experiment was carried out in
temperature controlled chamber (15±1˚C) as well as under ambient temperature
conditions. Results represents a minimum fluctuations in process parameter with
maximum reduction in COD, BOD, TS and VS with maximum specific biogas yield of
0.24 l/g VS and 0.22 l/g VS destroyed for ambient and controlled temperature condition
respectively for the substrate treated with 24g biochar/kg food waste and 150g cow
dung/kg food waste (T17). A highest reduction in COD, 45.68 percent (T17) and BOD
45.4 percent (T15) TS 21.40 percent (T13) and VS 25.30 percent (T13) was observed.
Results also indicates a 52 percent and 70 percent higher biogas production (3.55 l)
with above treatment (T17) as compared to (1.69 l) and (1.04 l) respectively for cattle
dung (T1) and food waste (T2) alone.
