Abstract
Themajorityofthetreesexaminedwereinthe11-15mheightclass(57.5%)and,51-60and61-70cmDBHclass(30%each).TheCBHrangedfrom4.03-12.75m,no.ofbranches(2-5)andbarkthickness(0.76-1.4)cm. The anatomical parameters studied were fibre length, fibre diameter, lumen diameter, wallthickness and specific gravity; and their derived properties, viz. runkel ratio, flexibility coefficient, slendernessratio, luce’sshapefactor, wallproportionandrigiditycoefficient.Thepooledmeanvaluesrecorded for all the eleven anatomical parameters were fibre length (1160.82 µm), fibre diameter (21.20µm), lumen diameter (16.16 µm), wall thickness (5.04 µm) and specific gravity (0.46); and their derivedproperties, viz. runkel ratio (0.63), flexibility coefficient (76.19%), slenderness ratio (54.75), luce’s shapefactor(0.26),wallproportion(47.68) andrigidity coefficient(0.48). Analysis of variance revealed the core sections for both the locations showed substantialvariations for all the fibre properties except for the wall thickness. However, the genotypes showedvariationsforallthefibrepropertiessignificantly.Clusteranalysiswasbasedonthepooledmeandataof growth as well as fibre morphological properties and classified the genotypes into seven clusterseach.Theresultsoftheprincipalcomponentanalysisexhibitedthatthemajorcontributortodivergencewas specific gravity in both the locations i.e., Manipur (25.37%) and Pasighat (20.68%). The correlationanalysis indicated that both the Manipur and Pasighat Gmelina trees exhibited a positive and strongassociationinthefibrediameterandlumendiameteranalysis.Thefibrederivativecorrelationanalysisalso revealed a positive and strong correlation between runkel ratio, luce’s shape factor, wall proportionandrigidity coefficientin both thelocations. The pooled result of the study showed that the tree GA38/P/CHF outperformed in four traitsi.e.,runkelratio(0.54),flexibilitycoefficient(78.89),wallproportionratio(42.42)andrigiditycoefficient(0.43).
