A study of information needs of farmers with respect to price discovery of fruits and vegetables

Abstract
The research project “A study of information needs of farmers with respect to price discovery of fruits and vegetables” was undertaken with the objectives to gain an in-depth knowledge about the presently used sources of information by fruit and vegetable growers, to understand their information needs regarding price discovery and to discover the gaps between the existing and the needed information. The study was conducted by selecting 100 fruit and vegetable growers. Primary data were collected from these respondents with the help of a structured and non-disguised questionnaire. It was found that mobile phone and ‘friends/ relatives/ neighbours’ were the mostly used sources and were considered to provide accurate and timely information. Information obtained from television, radio and newspaper regarding price discovery was considered to be less accurate. The important information needs were regarding demand, total area under crop and daily arrivals. Gaps were found between the existing and the needed information as the information on important aspects like demand and total area under crop was not available to most of the fruit and vegetable growers. The presently available information on important parameters useful for price discovery was found to be less accurate and not available on appropriate time. Most of the farmers were not satisfied with the presently available information. They were ready to pay price for obtaining information useful for price discovery
