dc.description.abstractIn agricultural field experimentation, the investigator is interested in estimating the effect of various treatments and making various comparisons with maximum accuracy and precision. This requires efficient planning of the field experiment. For improving the efficiency of experimental technique apart from other considerations like randomization, local control and replication, the size and shape of plot adopted for the experiment is also of great importance. It is well established fact that every experimental material area) has an inherent variation i.e. soil variability and due to this variability the response from different identically treated experimental units or crop raised from different plots of same size with same treatment and uniform cultural practices will be different. This sort of variation is usually measured by coefficient of variation (CV). If CV is high (or low), it indicates the high (or low) variation in soil fertility. The magnitude of inherent variation (soil variability) depends on size and shape of plots and blocks adopted by the experimenter. Thus for efficient planning of experiments, our problem will be to find out the best possible size and shape of plot and block for experimentation so that the error variation has minimum effect on treatment comparisonsen_US
