Abstract
In the kharif season of 2020, an experiment entitled “Effects of seed priming on seed yield and quality in Soybean (Glycine max L.)” was carried out at experimental field of Regional Research Centre Amravati, (Dr. PDKV, Akola) (M.S.). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications involving different seed priming treatments with different chemicals viz. (T1) (untreated seeds) as control, (T2) hydro priming for 2 hrs, (T3) priming with 100 ppm GA3 2 hrs, (T4) priming with CaCl2 (1%) for 2 hrs, (T5) priming with 1% KNO3 for 2 hr, (T6) seed treatment with 100ppm IAA for 2 hr, (T7) seed treatment with seed treatment with Carbendazim @ (0.2%) and (T8) seed treatment with Rhizobium culture (2.5%), The soybean variety was AMS-1001.The field observations were recorded on seed quality and yield contributing characters. The laboratory analysis was carried out to assess seed quality in seed testing laboratory of Seed Technology Research Unit Dr. P.D.K.V., Akola. The results exhibited that seeds primed with CaCl2 @ 1% (T4) followed by GA3 @ 100 ppm (T3) and IAA @ 100 ppm (T6) recorded significantly higher germination percentage, seedling length, seedling dry weight, Vigour index I and II respectively over the untreated control T1. Other priming treatments also found significant in seed quality characters as compared to untreated control treatment. Study of field performance revealed that seed priming with CaCl2-1% recorded minimum days to field emergence, higher initial plant stand and minimum days for 50% flowering. Plant height was higher in seed priming with GA3 -100 ppm followed by priming with CaCI2-1%. In respect of yield and yield contributing characters seed priming treatment with CaCI2-1% recorded more pods per plant, seed yield per plant and seed yield per hectare. GA3 -100 ppm and IAA @ 100 ppm were at par among themselves in days to field emergence, higher initial plant stand, minimum days for 50% flowering, pods per plant, seed yield per plant and seed yield per hectare. Observation on seed quality after harvest revealed that moisture content was not significant in all treatments. Seed priming with CaCI2-1% and GA3 @ 100 ppm recorded higher germination than other treatments and control. Seed priming with CaCI2-1% followed by GA3 @ 100 ppm recorded higher seedling length, seedling dry weight, vigour index I and vigour index II. Seed priming with CaCI2-1% is helpful in enhancing seed quality parameters like germination and improve initial plant stand, seed yield per plant as well as per hectare.
